Well, the news is out! Britain has just exited the European Union and the global financial shockwaves are only rumbling through the markets. It’s only been hours since the announcement but what does this mean for Domain Investors?

For a start, the forex interest in the event has been so enormous that popular website XE.COM crashed. I spent the last ten minutes trying to get any sort of activity and finally gave up. My guess is that it’s experiencing the impact of a very real DDOS (Distributed Denial Of Service) attack from genuine requests rather than a large botnet.

After looking up exchange rates for accounts where I have a balance in a currency that could be affected by BRexit, I am now wondering which ccTLD registries will now have to make changes for the technical requirement if registrants are no longer EU. I'm sure there will be grandfather clauses, and I would think they would rewrite to continue to include UK, maybe?

Most of my accounts are held and billed in Euro, though some show USD, but are actually calculated in their home currency. I have lots of ccTLDs.

Britain looses membership of the EU !

Could this mean a mass drop of .EU domains where registrants no longer satisfy requirements ?

Will there be a grace period where British registrants can quickly sell their .EU domains that they will lose there rights to ?

Or, have they lost the rights to this ccTLD with immediate effect ?

British are still in EU, this is not a game and will take time, 2-3 years + may be 7 years transition.

If you have cash in pounds buy gold....

It's what it means for domain investors, you're correct but the markets must be watched. This is an important factor concerning them leaving the EU and domaining etc..

Do we not watch China's economy?

Myself and the OP are merely showing how the markets are upset and a spike of Gold and Silver.

Let's see how it effects domaining, if at all...

There are much more important factors concerning domaining and the Brexit than watching gold and sliver prices going up and down all day.

I have mentioned the .EU ccTLD and the fact that millions of British .EU registrations may have to be canceled.

I agree with you that the EU registrations are a LARGE concern and that many people may end up being caught-out.... The issue surrounding the gold/silver/forex fluctuations is that domain investors need to be much more aware in this volatile climate in what they invest. For example, if I was buying a traffic portfolio on numbers from May then I would be seriously wanting to reappraise the deal. It's the volatility that brings uncertainty in deal making.....I wouldn't be surprised if we see a slow down in deals until there is much more stability.

EFTA countries are eligible too.

Any person, company or organisation based in the European Union, Iceland, Norway or Liechtenstein can register a domain name under .eu or .ею (Cyrillic script).
