What are your ideas on social bookmarking sites?

I would like to raise a question about social book sites here! What are your ideas, recommendations and strategies on how to promote a website in social networks like Digg, Delicious and others? Is there any sense to perform website submission to social networking sites and how to get high amounts of traffic as a result? Could you please share your own experience on this matter?

Social sites are good places to mingle with people who share similar interests as you, set up an account, completing your profile page, adding a nice picture of yourself and finding real online friends who share similar interests like yourself.

From there if you have something newsworthy, unique or shocking to say, submit a link to your web page, it can create a buzz overnight driving thousands of interested visitors to your web site. But If it's boring link it will be buried by more interesting stories.

You've got to make content that fits the audience. If you browse top digged stuff on digg, for example, you'll start to get a feel for the type of content that succeeds there. Each social network has its own tastes. I've made content specifically for specific social media sites and it has been a great success. I've also submitted content to social media sites with no regard for tailoring the content and it always flops.

Stumbleupon is good for consumer type of sites. One gaming platform site that I have has received over 500 visits from Stumbleupon. Its been stumbled about 10 times.

Nice way to get backlinks and traffic ...

If you want to get the success at there than you should consider two things first -

1) Your Friend Circle
2) Power in your submitted story.

If you have these two things than I am sure you will be able to get very very good traffic ...

i am an active user on digg, i could give you some advice.

1) read the TOS. an obvious approach is to post articles that are basically reworded off the net. that is a common occurrence and just takes a few reports to get you reprimanded. do it enough times and you're banned.
2) create original and captivating content. there has to be some shock-value behind it. browse stories that have gotten a lot of diggs in the categories you are competing in.
3) add many friends, many "quality" friends. friends that look at their shouts and make diggs. this way when you submit an article, you have hundreds of friends to share it with.

that's how you're going to give your site/content exposure. but it's important your actually interested in the content your writing and the friends your making. coming off as a spammer on digg is really obvious; you won't get the kind of exposure you want.

if your content is about the environment, look at the most popular articles posted in the environment section and add the people that posted.

you can see the history of the articles they've submitted and digg, giving you a good idea of their preference.

common, noone can tell you how much traffic you will get. Just get 100 digs and you'll see

typically, people will read the story before or after the digg

you can expect a good number of those diggs to result into hits, especially if it's a good article

i'd worry about coming out with the thought-provoking original content first, you're up against a lot of competition

Perhaps I will get banned, but there are limitless amounts of account names and emails available. There is too much money to be made to cry over being banned a time or two. However, this is not a technique to use on your actual money sites for long term growth.
