Why are there so many TLD's now?Isn't there enoguh as it is?I donts ee the reasoning in all these new TLD's. Like I dont even know what most of them stand for. Like what does .tel stand for? Telephone? What would the point of having that TLD be?

I'd imagine dot asia is pretty self explanatory but for .tel, check out their page at http://telnic.com/

"The purpose of .Tel is to provide individuals and businesses a text-based naming and navigation structure for the Internet communications space: any individual or business will be able to initiate communication or access services simply by inputting AdamSmith.tel or Hertz.tel on their Internet-enabled communications device."

How are they going to monitor that it's used that way? It's obviously not gonig to be used the way that they intend it to be, not with all these domainers about! Unless they monitor each site, which I see as unlikely. So, I dont really see the point to this exstention.

There are more questions than answers regarding .tel at this point. You'll just have to wait and see like the rest of us.

I still think .kid or .fam would be a nice TLD that would sell well and serve a legitimate need. I don't think Icann or any government body wants to legitimize the porn industry so .xxx doesn't seem plausible.

I know there WAS .kids.us but it was poorly thought out and a really difficult extension for children to know and use. The restrictions on advertising also made it unfeasible for most companies to profitably operate a site. I do think there needs to be a code of conduct for advertisers but sites with quality content need revenue to exist.

I agree, think. .fam would be a great name, if families could own there own sites and domain name and such but that would still cause problems, as theres always going to be two or more families with the same last name that aren't related.

Beyond .asia and .tel:

I think .pro is trying to negotiate a new contract and open up registration. (kind of like opening the corral gates after Encirca has already let all the horses out)

ICANN is preparing rules for another round of gTLD proposals. They're already actually about 2 years behind on these plans.

what would gTLD stand for? And what would the point of .pro be?
If they do allow pro, someone should preorder name.pro! haha

.pro has been out for a while... (years?)
gTLD means a generic TLD (like .com, .net, etc.)

Here are all the General Top Level Domains (gTLDs). As you can see a lot of them are very rarely used, mostly due to restrictions by the registry. The intent at ICANN was to have a TLD for each industry, taking the pressure off .com.

The efforts by .pro to become mainstream (and therefore make a lot of money) show the flaws in that idea. I suspect that the trend to open up extensions to all comers will continue, .org pointed the way. Watch .cat, in that regard. I have no idea if the people who proposed that extension had hidden plans, but the potential of a lot of money from cat lovers could eventually sway that registry.

Isn't this TLD restricted to companies that have an office or presence in the region?

That's not a "TLD." You have to have Tor or whatever other programs come with it to be able to use it.
