My thoughts on this are simple, it is a load of rubbish.

Open source is great and doesn't take "more physical labor to implement open source because it isn't pre-packaged" and "You have to have software developers that can make this stuff work." is also a load of crap, im not a software developer and can make OSS work fine.

My college which is higher education uses things like Gimp and work fine and there IT deprtment are not software developers.

Some people are so stupid and i agree with this statement "Or, as I suspect, is the study just another proprietary software vendor funded report for discouraging the adoption of open source software?".

Your thoughts?

It's not as simple as setting up windows, let's leave it at that.

I've had quite a bit of experience working with colleges and universities and I can tell you that this article makes perfect sense from what I've seen. For one, colleges like to work with vendors, a central point of contact. This way when something goes wrong they know who to call to get technical help. OS doesn't really provide as much of that at the current state. Do you call Apache to find out about their server?

Also the people that use the computers are not the ones generally proficient in their use, opting for whatever has a wizard that they can do themselves without having to call the IT guy to change something.

From a student perspective, honestly, Gimp won't impress on a resume as much as Photoshop would.

There is a lot of great open source projects, don't get me wrong, but I agree that for the college scene they aren't really as practical as off the shelf applications from major vendors.

Sure, there's easy to use open source software, but as a rule, closed source apps are more likely to be of the "click one button and it works" type.

How many webmaster forums are devoted to Windows vs Linux? People that run windows don't need anywhere near the support that *nix users need. I consider myself very well versed in Unix and I have to check for support at sites and forums all the time. I think twice a year I might need help for my windows.
