I want to install a web server on my computer so I can easily practice php coding. I am running WinXP. I tried to download Apache and install but could not get my computer to recognize the files and open them.

First Question: Should I be looking at Apache or some other web server?

Second : If Apache, what is the trick to getting your computer to recognize the files and open them?

Thanks In Advance

Okay, I'm off to make pizzas...something I am much better at doing.

There was a php+mysql package for Windows called eNovative or something like that. You can try searching for it on Google.

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html

It's a basic package of PHP, MySQL, and Apache with addons for other languages. Just put files in your htdocs directory and you have your own web server to test files on your computer. It's what I use and it works great.

Go to whatever your server folder is >> xampp >> htdocs

That should be accessible thru http://localhost when your server is running.

Cheers :) I use that package myself, very usefull tools there. Good luck!

I recommend Abyss Web Server. Search google on this, fairly easy.

What happens when you try to surf to your local web server? It sounds like it might be misconfigured if you are saying it is trying to let you download them?

If you provide more details hopefully we can fix this :)

Basically what vip-ip said. On my Windows XP computer it's in C:\apachefriends\xampp\htdocs.

Just put your PHP files in there, let's say: index.php. Go to your web browser and type in http://localhost/index.php and there it is.
