For .TV developers out there, what type of hosting are you guys using?

Shared/Virtual/Dedicated?

For shared/virtual/dedicated, which specific host are you using.

I'm planning on hosting some videos (uploaded by myself) on my site and gradually increase the number of videos.
I expect to see +100 videos.
I'm not too sure about the size yet, but the videos will generally be around 3-7 minutes long.

I'm using a shared one, Cirtex Hosting. Ended up purchasing a 2 year hosting for $60 using a 50% off coupon.

I haven't got really much traffic yet as I've just started experimenting with different scripts.

Thank you htmlindex.
I've heard some good things about cirtex hosting. I guess I'll try it out ;)

Dedicated.

I make more then enough off adsense to cover my cost. Plus I like the freedom to know I am not subject to some host overselling and jamming up the server resources.

The uploading and file conversion for videos takes a fair bit of cpu resources and your host will get cranky if you take over the processor enough times.

A small server with a gig of ram and 1000 gb bandwidth was running me $70 a month with web host manager and cpanel and fantastico through dedicatedbox.net.

They guys there are top notch, super responsive and they run specials all the time.

I just ordered my next server with them.

I'm thinking about using a youtube like script.
I guess it will take a lot of resources for uploading and file conversion.

Depends on the video, could take only minutes or seconds, or could take much longer. But either way, yes it does.

Personally, I used to rely very heavily on reseller hosting accounts. It just got to the point that I needed more control over the server and I was getting more and more irritated with hosts that oversold even when claiming not to.

I was getting larger and larger packages to accomodate my needs and it got to the point where I was either going virtual or dedicated.

Virtual can still, although it shouldn't happen, be subject to what else is going on on the the server, and the cost difference wasn't worth the headache.

Now I have a dedicated server that I don't have to worry about what any one else is doing on my server, and for $20 extra a month they "manage" it for me. I still get full access, but that $20 piece of mind that they can go in and hard reboot or recover if needed is worth it.

I could do it myself, I just don't want to.

I also toyed with the plan of getting another server and reselling space on it only to .tv sites/members. I just haven't gone in depth yet.

I'm on shared hosting (I have 2 accounts: UKcheaphost.net and ASmallOrange.com), as my sites don't need so much space & bandwidth. My TV that I've developed has videos just embeded from Youtube and Metacafe, so I'm actualy "stealing" their bandwidth - so I'm fine on a shared hosting plan.

What script are you using for the embed of Youtube & Metacafe? Does that allow adsense or other advertising as well with the script?

I suppose I should have asked....

If there was a service for dot tv forum members, would anyone be interested in signing up for service? Priced like others of course.

No any script, I just copy and past the video embed code into my Wordpress posts (into the code). Adsense is allowed.

I am looking into getting an upgradeable vps... dedicated is another option, but i do worry about server failures.

I worried about that to, that's why I spend the extra $20 a month for "managed" services.

Takes the worry away.

I used shared and dedicated. I am moving away from hosting videos. Its difficult to profit from so I use youtube and it doesn't cost me a thing!
