While building a website what are the SEO related factors one should keep in mind?

try to avoid flash, and for most sites, images are supposed to complement textual content, not vice versa.

If you have many pages, maybe add a sitemap.

The most important thing which I guess is missing in the answers are the DIV format of the design .Please try to use DIV format instead of table or any other format.

- Pay attention to Google's Webmaster guidelines, ESPECIALLY the "quality guidelines" section.

- Don't feel the need to repeat keywords over and over in your content. Natural writing will get you a lot farther than keyword-spam. Search engines are smart enough to recognize a 500 word article about "green widgets" without you repeating the phrase "green widgets" over and over and over again.

- Don't be afraid to link out from your pages ... just be selective about the sites you link to.

deffinitely avoid flash as others have mentioned. once you've got your meta keywords and description sorted apply them to text on the actual page - make it readable though. I've seen some sites where the text on the page is just a list of keywords separated by commas. don't go down that route.

You should set up your meta tags in SEO friendly way, try making your links navigation in SEO friendly way and if you can them make your url's SEO friendly as well. This can all be added after you have made your content rich with keywords of your targeted viewers.
