ccTLD Warning about .io Domains

Silly me.

Five days ago, I registered Zix.io to go with zixio.com. I thought it would be cool to sell the domains as a package to an .io-crazy start up.

Never again will I register an .io.

The forwarding doesn't work. What's more, the whois is blank, with a notation "Domain reserved."

Domainmonster is working on it, but it seems to be a registry problem.

After I inquired about my support ticket, I received this message today from DM support:

I have emailed [.io registry] again this morning to chase them up as they often do take a while to respond (my emphasis). I still haven't heard from the registry so unfortunately have no new information for you regarding how long it will take to fully register zix.io, however I will of course be in touch as soon as I hear from them.

The next time I have a "bright idea," whip me 10 times with a wet noodle.

Maybe I'll luck out, and it will be a registry reserved domain, and I'll get a refund.

Just be aware that, at best, this is a poky registry; at worst, they're totally incompetent.

In any case, if you plan to build a start up on this cTLD, think again, take a pill, and chill.

you should have consulted with me prior to registering; you should use iwantmyname.com, networksolutions.com, name.com, all three display whois correctly; however, iwantmyname is cheapest and domain is in your account seconds after registering with full control.

Domainmonster - $79
iwantmyname - $49

I have to disagree, this is domainmonsters part for not displaying the whois correctly nor connecting with the nic.io registry properly; even you said Domainmonster is working on it - does not seem like it's the registry's fault.

Email both billing and support from nic.io and explain the error between the registration process with domainmonster and the issues so you can definitely get a response; this is not that big of matter - just a little glitch, they will get it fixed.

I tried emailing them, but the message didn't pass the "validation" test, whatever the &$%^* that is.

Here's the message I wanted to send:

Over five days ago, I registered zix.io through Domainmonster. The name is in my account, but the whois is still empty, and the domain does not forward at all.

Could you please look into this for me through Domainmonster?

Nic.io emailed me back:

Thanks for your email

I am sorry for the hold up. Your registrar is sending us funds to top-up their account with us but it has yet to arrive.

Once payment is received your name will be activated. They are a good Registrar it is probably a banking issue.

What is going on here? I paid your registrar--your financial relationship with NIC.io is your issue, not mine. In my opinion, this hold up is entirely unprofessional.

This is rather surprising since I just registered this domain on July 30.

Can this registry REALLY be this incompetent?

Zix.io is now forwarding to my Brands Z site, but www.Zix.io does NOT redirect at all.

What's more, whois is still empty, and I get an error message when I try to to change it at the registrar.

I'm beginning to think I should get paid for assuming this dreadful burden.

Beware using this ccTLD.

lol.. whois is showing your information through nic.io; however it does say expired - not sure who you contact about the domain being expired; I would contact both nic.io and domainmonster about that.

Demand a refund and move on IMO this name is worthless even paired with the matching .com
Not trying to be mean, you are one of my favorite NPers but this is IMO, ok?

It looks as though this problem has been resolved.

The forwarding works on zix.io and www.zix.io, and the Whois is correct (I checked on nic.io).

Domainmonster (with my prodding) kept on top of it and answered yesterday's email. I never did hear back from nic.io.

Guess who I believe is the competent party? (Hint: Begins with "D").

I'm sorry you had a negative experience Ms Domainer. I think the problem may very well lie with DM, however, as I have nothing but high praise for the .io registry.

Yes, they are a small registry, but they're very professional and dealing with them direct (at nic.io) is always going to be the best way to register and administer an .io domain.
