So does anyone here use a VPS (Virtual Private Server) for their hosting? I am considering upgrading from a reseller and I was wondering if many people actually used VPS instead of a dedicated server because I do not have a reason to get one and I don't have the money.

I own a Virtuozzo server and have offered VPS's to a few of my clients. They have worked very well as an alternative to getting a dedicated server, with almost no drawbacks. I have three of my own VPS on the same server as well.

I'd recommend them.

Thanks RJ and I also found a great company ServInt. They come reccomended on WebHostingTalk and also I talked to their sales support and they have fast response times and also they explain their solution in a very detailed and easy to understand matter. I will probably use them once all of my testing is done and I have alot of free time.

I also have a some Virtuozzo offerings and some based on Xen. What I have found is they work great when you use the right. For example if you want to use spam assain you really should offer that on its own server as it can eat up a vps, as can cpanel in some cases. If you use something like directadmin or no control panel they make nice ways to isolate some services. At this point though, the price of dedicated has come down enough, that for most clients I recommend they go to a low end dedicated instead though.

i highly recomend http://rackforce.com they use Virtuozzo im pretty sure, and there support is "Fast Attack Support" and the name they gave it, is the trueth. Toll-free number, they accept paypal (they request the cash, its not a subscription), and a credit card.

They offer hosts the ability to resell there VPS as well, more information can be provided in the member area.

Hmm I looked at Rackforce and it seems they charge extra for some extra features like monitoring and backups but ServInt provides these for free.

i do that myself anyways, so if thats something you cant do, then you might want to go with them :)

Well I am new to a VPS so I could use some help at the beginning and also backups would be nice because at least I have an off-site backup that I can use and I have school so if something is wrong with the VPS at least they can monitor it for me.

Rackforce is pretty sweet, if you have some linux experience, id suggest to go with them. And to configure a backup, you can that VIA WHM in the root control. And have it uploaded to a ftp server of your choice. Now, if the server does go down, you have a backup server with all your files. There for all your files are 100% safe. You could always do that, and maybe purchase a storage unit. I have a storage unit on my own network in my house, where i store all my sites backups, own ftp server ect... ect.. thats how i manage to backup my files.

Yeah if I could configure a way to hookup a FTP server at my house and have backups automatically dump there that would be great but I am also considering going with PowerVPS because I saw that ServInt has some problems with server loads and lag. But, I should be studying now as tommorow is my last day and also I have regents so I will try to keep this out of my head for a week.

I used to use one from dinix.com - some of the best hosting I ever had - check them out if you get a chance

I have friends who use VPS. I would recommend a VPS over a reseller account due to all the issues I read about with them.

Depending on your ability to manage a server go ahead get one ASAP. Just make sure you use a program like UnixBench to see what the true performance is.

On overloaded VPSs you might get Pentium 1 speeds during peak times. On properly managed VPSs you can get extremely good speeds and they might guarantee a certain % of CPU power and Memory.

Choose carefully and you'll probably never look back.

Cheers
