This is a picture I took about 4 years ago. It's a Cicada in the very last stage of moulting. It was nearly ready to fly when I spotted it. I ran inside to grab my camera and was only able to shoot a few pictures before it flew away. After it flew off, I carefully removed the dry skin from the tree and I still have it in a jar on my desk.
A lot of people call these "locusts", especially around my neck of the woods. Here's a link to the Cicada wikipedia article... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada About halfway down the page (on the right), you can see a time-lapsed video of a Cicada moulting.
