I truly have never seen a forum with so many people willing to help others you guys are all great!!!
Question:
So you have several domain names registered, Do you HAVE to have technical skills to be in this business? I could not build a website unless cookie cutter and I mean cookie cutter. So if I did want to be good at this would it matter and what would be your first step?? It looks to me like Parking?
Also I am confused about Overture? what would be considered a high ranking number since I noticed that if its over 2000 the domain names seem to be gone, so what number would you consider a promising count.
Also still trying to figure out the formula if a name is desirable???? or has potential.

Thank you for all the wonderful post and I am so happy to have found this site!

Cheers!

You will enjoy it - this is fresh air compared to other webmaster kinda forums. I am not quite sure what specifically you mean by being successful in. Domain game I assume but then you talk about web site design etc.

My philosophy is to do a little bit of everyhting until you find something that works. Then you repeat the crap out of it. Find something that makes you $50 a month. Then repeat it 100 times and in as many different ways possible so you wont be hurting if one hoster gets shut down or one website (if thats what you do) gets blocked etc.

But test the waters. Domain bis is great place to start since everyhting starts with a domain name. Parking or mini site. yes and yes. and of course if your objective is to sell domains list them everywhere you can including sedo (most importantly.)

You park it first. Then you create a site but you can even keep it parked. Just have that domain as a site somewhere else. The key is to have one platform site.

Have fun. Remember the more specific youre questions the more specific the answers.

Cheers,

I agree with Fleege, find something that works and reproduce :)

As far as domaining goes it really depends on if you want to just resell domains or provide content.
If you're just looking to resell names you buy, then by all means park them somewhere that you can earn PPC like Sedo or Afternic until you do sell.
If you're interested in building websites around your names and don't know how, then there are many programs that practically do it for you. WebEasyPro is one of them. You can use it until you at least get an idea of what's behind a website. Then you can move on to Dreamweaver, Photoshop, etc. to make your sites more unique. You could even look into reading up on PHP, MYSQL, HTML.. and just code them yourself after a while.

I use to have an easy website built around PetCrates.com. It was a "review" site. I just researched things like cost, shipping prices, special promotions, brands carried, etc and wrote reviews about several different pet websites with affiliate links right beside them. I also added things like crate training articles, and free pet related puzzles and stuff to keep people coming back. Just to give you an idea. I just have Petcrates parked now and am receiving PPC. I don't have time for content right now for any of my names.

The higher the Overture the more you might expect in PPC. For instance, I have a few names with around 2000 overture and I make about 3-4 bucks a month on them. I'm sure it varies though. I have some names with over 300000 Overture and because they're .cc or .us, etc.. they hardly make anything.

Hope all this helps... Good Luck

You don't need to have much technical skill to do this. (Well the least you should know is how to update your domain nameservers.) :)

But don't stop there. Because there's going to be thousands of others who will be getting ahead of you.

So a good place to start is to simply spend time just reading through the posts here on the forum. You'll learn something new everyday.

Pretty soon you will be dispensing advice to newbies coming on board. The more you learn the better equipped you will be to succeed in the domain business yourself.

You're right about parking. Most people would begin by parking their domains at a domain exchange site like Sedo or Afternic.

Besides the opportunity to give your domain some exposure on these sites, you also get to track the kind of traffic your domain receives. This would help you decide which domains could be your important ones, or which ones you want to consider developing. Or even which ones to get rid off. :guilty:

In addition, you may also be earning from visitor clicks though PPC programs
on your parked domain.

As a newbie too could someone explain this for me :hearts:

You park it first. Then you create a site but you can even keep it parked. Just have that domain as a site somewhere else. The key is to have one platform site.

I have lots parked at sedo that are making $0 I do not have the know-how to do anything with the domain names was just hoping to either make something out of parking or hoping someone will buy them at more then I bought them.

I dont know anything at all about making a site out of anything and dont have the money to do this even if I did

Any help welcome

Let me clarify parking AND having a site.

The thing is you CAN do both BUT of course a single domain as typed in can only go to one place. But lets say you aquire a great domain as urlguru.com, citizenK9.com or totalcustody.com or nintendoHQ.com as I have in this great forum. What you do next is YOU park them and optimize the parking spots. Then you create a mini site (more like a page) at your "platform" site. (everybody needs a platform site. Kinda like your digital nuclear testing grounds.- hopefully with good pr rank) Here you create a one pager that basically only gets web search traffic. No type ins. You can still "brand" this page as its original domain. Soon you will make money 2 ways. From parking and from the traffic you get to your one pagers at your platform. AND then you promote the domain as much or little as you like. Do at least the obvious ones - like listing at SEDO (not park there imho) and sooner or later your SHIP will come in. (if thats what you want to do sell the dom) You will get offers on your domains and if you done it right you can laugh and ignore the silly offers and not have to feel guilty about being up to your neck with domains that you dont know what to do with.

THE DOMAIN BIZ IS SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL. But go slow. Dont just reg and buy anything as we all did at one point.

Thats the short version of it. Cheers.

Fleege, what you say makes sense. I'm a newbie too so forgive me if the following question has an obvious answer -

Out of all 94 domains you have listed on Sedo you don't even have 1 bid. How come?

No bids on my sedo Sedo names.

Yeah. it does take time and official bids on sdo are hard to come by. this is why you need to make your domains work 365 days a year. Sedo is notorious for not producing a lot of offers. People even with great names dont get offers through the official make offer process. Quite frankly its kinda scary to make offers through sedo imo. And if you dont park (list only) at sedo your domains will be quite hard find there. (they give sedo parked names priority in their search results). + you will find very few end users if you rely on sedo alone. Thats why I say you should park, list everywhere, make mini site/page around your domain.

if you check my domains I have only actively started to put them to "work" for the last 2-3 months.
