Value your domain

Most people don’t realize the true value of a domain, if you consider every domain that is worth a reg. fee should be considered a good purchase. Most domains this days cost about $6 USD to register, having that in mind lets say you pay your domain $8 USD.

Now if you calculate that 1yr that you reg. domain name for has 365 days means that your domain costs you only $0.02 cents a day. Most of parking programs pay minimum of $0.03 cents a click even thou there are few that go under that minimal price and also there are click that are worth $5 USD and even $30 USD clicks. Most reg. fee domains can manage to make at least 1 click every few days so in a long run if you don’t make money of domain you will only lose about $1 to $2 a year. As we all know domain industry is in power drive and no one knows when it will slow down, every domain purchased is a potential gold mine in a long run. As internet grows and more business wants to go online with their merchandise every domain goes up in value. If considered that in 15 to 20 years probably more then 70% of world population will have their own computer and access to internet domain names will increase in value by 600% if not more.

So lets do some more math and statistics, if you lose on ever one of your domain names 2$ every year that means that in 10 yr period you lost only $20. Considering that you bought a domain that is at least worth a reg. fee at this time in 10yr you will be able to sell it for minimal price of 50$ USD. Now some people will say that is too much work and time to make only 30$ profit but you must think that you didn’t do any hard work at all to achieve that minimal profit. Now if you have few dollars to play around and purchase a large amount of domains for example 1,000 or more you will make a minimal profit of $30,000USD in 10 year period. As we all know every domain has a different value and it can’t be known, to one person example: “MyTopDomain can be considered a ref. fee domain and to someone it could be $10,000 you just never know. From my personal experience I have reg. domain that I tried to sell for a minimal price of 30$ and I had no success, I finally gave up and put it a side with in 6 months from my registration I sold that same domain for high $XXX. I made on that one sale more then 100x the reg. fee that I have paid for so what we talked about earlier in this article with in 10 years from your reg. fee someone will come around to buy that domain from you. Domain industry is very rewording for minimal amount of time put into it. Little bit off topic some people like to play stock market and I have personally have tried that as well and it’s bad. It’s 50/50 if you will make money or lose on every purchase, even the well established companies with high returns can go broke and you lose all your money. Most of those stocks are also very expensive, so buy good domain names you won’t lose money ever.

basically if a domain is not generating income, then it will depend on
future supply and demand. If the demand is lower, in the case of
unifiedroot scheme, then possibly the investment may turn to be bad.

Nice read.

However I do think that your time should really be factored into the equations. If you are just trading domains as a hobby then you can probably ignore this, however if you are like me and running your own business it is all too easy to start putting in too many hours which will cancel out any profit. I also have to account for bank charges / tax / accountant fees etc.

Wishing you all the best.

In general if you select your domains wisely this math is viable.

But....

This is IMO wrong math. Shure it is not hard work, but its risky invest.

I did over the years some controlling work on me and my portfolio,
and the overall conclusion is that a domain sold under 100$ is a loss.

Yes, and I hear the average is about $200.00. If you ain't selling for at least $200.00 you are wasting your time. I think, though, it really all depends on how fast you can unload it and your current situation.

If I am driving in my car and thinking and I happen to think of a good domain that I know I can reg and unload within a week or at least $30 then why not do it? I mean, for me it would be OK to do that but for those that make more money than me they might say it is a waste of time and resources.

SO to a certain extent..to each his own, I guess.

So if you have the money to buy 1,000 domains then why wste the money on just reg fee domains when you could buy fewer but better domains for more which will more likley be worth more in the future. I'm not saying that there are no good domains left because new great domains come with time and events and uch, but surely, from a financial standpoint, wwhy not buy names tha tare more expensive but have a better future?

very nice post. I would add something to it.May be it will sound strange but...Finding right domain today for professional domainer is a hours and hours research job. Sometimes it takes a day, sometimes months. What i am trying to say, that i consider finding a domain is also an intellectual hard job, and it would be nice if people would apretiate that job. When you find good domain (pronounsable, with keywords, which fits together, short, w/o hyppens, etc), its just wrong, that poeple want to pay a reg fee for it. Very funny to me looks appraisal section, when almost anything, wich is not a short .com considered as a reg fee.
So i think that any normal previosly registered domain have right to have some reseller value at least a little bit higher than just a reg fee. And this should be some kind of rule in respect all of us, domainers, who spend lots of hours in domain researches.

Enjoyable read and provides a well needed lift to those of us who are at low morale.

However, not sure I understand why selling below $100 is not worth it. The big 4-figure sales we're all waiting for are too rare to bank on yet there is real money to be made in high volume, low priced sales. There are plenty of names to be had at reg fee and sold for $20-$50 to emotional buyers. Remember - Ford and General Motors makes far more than Ferrari or Porsche. Probably... :)
