I'm living in upstate NY right now. I'm originally from Arizona, and we always just said NORTHERN ARIZONA. So when I came to NY, I noticed how many people say their either from NYC or "upstate". I just thought I'd give the domain a shot, and sure enough, it was available. I grabbed it now, and I'm still pretty certain it's a good find. My only concern is the NY. Do you think upstatenewyork.us is a better name?

Please let me know what you think!

Thanks

I'm not :'( crying or anything, I'm just wondering why only reg. fee so I can avoid making any impulse buying dn decisions in the future. It's a learning process over here!

Thanks for the inputs. I'm definitely going to list it on eBay, so if anyone wants a link to the auction when I get it up, just pm me.

Thanks,
azt

"Upstate New York" is a staple over here. Everything that's not NYC/Long Island is Upstate New York.
This could be a good real estate or vacation destination (Niagara Falls, Lake Placid, etc.) site.

Being an upstate New Yorker myself, I can appreciate the value of this name. It could generate a good steady stream of PPC income if you developed it into a tourism site of sorts. Have lots of PPC links to the many attractions in this part of the country.

If you did enough research, I'm sure you could find quite a few travel-related firms that would pay you $x,xxx for this name.

Good luck,

Gene

Thats a real useless domain (my opinion). Extremely low $xx!

I'm from NYC and UpstateNY is a HUGELY POPULAR TERM for a hugely popular area. Will agree with Gene on this one...Mid to high XXX to right end-user, probably someone with a Bed & Breakfast...or a real estate broker.

Great Name.

Since I am from Upstate NY also, I think this is a great name.

:lala:

I have a few names like that. For example SaratogaPost.com, MohawkRiver.Com, or AdirondackCountry.Com. Unless you are from the region, many people would not recognize the value.

Anyway, nice name!

I would have to agree with Gene. Value is a judgement call. A travel agent might be very interested in this name. Think about names like google and yahoo. These are not names you would think to type in unless it was a household name. I mean, what the hell is a google anyway?
This name could be very valuable if developed. Mid x,xxx.

I'm in Upstate NY too and can also say the term "upstate" is used ALL the time..Even the local news refers to itself as serving "Central and Upstate NY"..I think it's a huge name, and the fact the longer version "upstatenewyork.us" is taken should show your name has value.
At least low-mid $XXX with potential for more.

Wow, thanks everyone! So maybe I should just hold on to it for now until .us becomes more popular?

It's been a few months since I posted this, and at least a few days since I asked for an appraisal, so I figured why not.

I haven't done anything with UpstateNY.us except make it my location on a bunch of forums (see left), and offer it to a bunch of hotels (no replies)

Is there any place that specializes in selling Place Domain Names?

Any more/updated thoughts on the value? A lot has changed in the past few months...

Thanks!

Now that I have a little more experience with appraisals I will give you a real one. Far too many people think that saying

low xxx actually means something..It doesn't and leads the person asking to feel pretty crappy about their name..So, here is how it should be..

UPSTATENY.US.

First of all, NY is the most accepted term for New York. People, in general don't spell it out. Upstate is also the most popular term for the part of NY that isn't over crowded. I just moved back from Upstate and that's what everyone calls is. The over all name has very good name recognition. Anyone seeing UpstateNY.us will know exactly what the site is about and that's important.

Google returns 7,330 matches for the term upstateny without any spaces. This is not how people usually think in terms of searching which means it's a pretty popular way to type it. And google doesn't try to correct you when you search for it.
If you add the space, you get 1,460,000 results. All directly New York related. With proper SEO you have a gold mine. UPSTATENY.us is direct, easy to remember, and there is no doubt what the site is about. Even the extention works in this case.

Undeveloped I would estimate the value between $900-$1200
Developed would be closer to $2,500-$5,000
Custome coding will increase the value to about $25,000.

Hang onto this name. Develope it.

Thank you and good luck.
