Interesting! I tried to register an expired Australian domain some weeks ago - silver.com.au
But you need to fulfill specific requirements, such as being an Australian resident, having a business in Australia, or having significant registered business links to Australia
I think the .com.au registry could gain a lot more sales if it relaxed its requirements
