I recently uploaded some files but cannot access them. I chmod-ed them to 0777. But I still get a 403 error when I go to any of those files.

.htaccess contains

Code:
Allow from all

Any ideas?

Might need more details. Uploaded some what? Does it work without the .htaccess file?

Sorry, uploaded some files. I uploaded them as root and then chown-ed them to the home directory's name. I've removed the .htaccess file and still get the same results. I have chown-ed them to nobody and apache and get more of the same.

Try chown to nobody and see if you still get the error.

Yep. Tried both nobody and apache and get more 403.

I just totally recreated the directory and any directory that is named 'stats' seems to get a 403 on my server. I'll just rename it to something else I guess.

Any idea where this weird setting is?

What exculty are you trying to do? You want to upload files as root. To a directory and you are using Virtual Directory or what ever to be able to view the files in the internet.. And you are getting a 403? meaning it is probably not chmodded or group permissioned right.

Well, I don't have to upload as root. I was just logged in as root doing some other things and had some files that needed to be uploaded. It turns out that any directoy named stats cannot be accessed by Apache for some weird reason.

I've just renamed it from stats to charts and it's fine. But is there any reason why "stats" is a "reserved" directory name or something?

It shouldn't be... That would take abit to figure out why it isn't working.

Alright, thanks Steve.

it is possible your control panel makes the domain logs available on that address ussually so by creating the folder yourself you are causing a problem.

Does cPanel usually do that? There are other accounts on the server with a stats folder in public_html. Not sure why this one account cannot have it.
