I was wanting to create a social network, however the name is throwing me off. I would love anyone's honest opinion.

Thank you.:gl:

Would something like "nuwire.com" be more valuable than "newwire.com" vs. u-wire? Whats your thoughts, again much appreciated on your posts. Just looking at some alternatives and longterm stradegies. There are also domains such as "iwire" or "iwire4u", curious if these are domains experienced lads stay away from and why.

Newwire.com would def be more valuable then nuwire.com or your name in question.

Iwire.com would be a nice name. Iwire4u.com is not.

If you heard a advertisement on the radio for "newwire.com" how would you think to type the name into a search engine? Just about everyone would immediately think "new wire" Not "nu wire". People don't refer to something new as "nu".

These are the types of aspects that need to be considered before making domain purchases.

I realized that. My statement was put in the wrong context. Take out the "but". By that time and I was already a few Kettle on the rocks in. ;)

Gotta love Cocktails and Domains :tri:

CocktailsAndDomains.com

Know what you mean...Get's expensive when you think..."I'll have another!" and you click on the buy-it-now domain button instead of the buzzer for your wife to bring another beer!! ;)

First start with a plan, then search for the right name...
Is it just a generic social network?
or does it have a theme?

It would be similar to saying I have this great name Frisbee, now what kind of product can I make to fit. Since you want to truly develop for long term, I say invent the product, then create the name, but that is just me.

I reg netziggy.com the other day not thinking about a social network, but when you think about it the elements are there. "Net" of course for the network and "Ziggy" which is generic or fictional but a close relative of "ZigZag" which is to move back and forth, which obviously would entail all of the members sending info back and forth from one to another. Hey, maybe I will start a social network named netziggy.com!!

...or just send me a large offer via PM and I will retire!!

-$35.00

The hyphen kills it. IMO.

-$35 is inaccurate.

I am willing to pay him $5 for it right now! ;)

Cliche but true...
A Domain's True Value is what someone is willing to pay for it.

In my honest opinion, U-WIRE.com is only valuable to the owners of UWIRE.com and the only reason they would even consider owning it is just to protect the brand and nothing more. If you got lucky they could possibly give you a couple hundred bucks for it but you would have to create a sales letter with a great pitch to protect the brand. Put the name on a wordpress theme and get it to pop up on the first page of Google when U WIRE is typed in and they may buy it just to protect the brand. Even though the concept they have really doesn't need brand protection but thats just my opinion.

1. Anytime you start a brand you never get a domain with a hyphen. I can't remember the last time I saw a successful startup brand with a hyphen.

2. When you do find that perfect domain make sure its a dot com and also buy the hyphen version to protect your brand and if you know the concept is going to be successful definitely buy the other extensions just for brand protection.

3. If you are going to get creative with the spelling make sure you get the alternative spellings also. For example, I would rather brand the domain UWIRE.COM but also own the domain YOUWIRE.COM and just forward it to the brand.

4. Most descriptive style brand domains are taken already so if you have to get a name that does not describe the business don't worry look at examples like MEEBO.COM

5. Long names are cool too. 3 or 4 word names may not be great sellers for domainers but could be amazing for a company name. Look for a twist on a fun saying. I just regged the other day, WHATSTHEBOTTOMLINE.COM, its long but who cares because its catchy and can work for banks, finance, stocks, game shows etc.....and its a saying that I myself have said a thousand times and have heard said a thousand times so who knows what it could be.

6. I think I have already said this but make sure its DOTCOM. You can brand other extensions but just cover yourself. For example, PARTYWITH.ME, may work but also get PARTYWITH.COM and PARTYWITHME.COM and just redirect them to the main brand. Thats for the people who can't remember things well. Stupid domain example but you get what I mean.

7. Make sure whatever business you ever start the name of the company matches the domain name 100%. There is way too many times I have seen a companies domain name not match the business name.

8. Please don't try to brand a DOT NET. LOL

9. You have to understand the times it is "OK" not to have the perfect DOTCOM. For instance if the business is going to be 100% internet based with no brick and mortar store make sure you get the perfect DOTCOM, or as close to it as possible. example would be SHOES.COM, RUNNINGSHOES.COM etc..... but if your main business is a shoe store in a strip mall and the brick and mortar store is your main focus and the internet is used to sell some shoes and maybe have some graphics, phone number, address etc.... its ok to have a name like RUNNINGSHOEWORLD.COM or RUNNERSWORLD.COM or whatever but you get what I mean.

10. Its time for me to go to sleep!!

"disclaimer" This is just my opinion and in no way shape or form does Namepros.com authorize these comments or take responsibility for their actions. LOL LOL

Be careful he might accept that offer.

The thought has yet to cross my mind, therefore not likely.

I did not get into this as a way to flip domains or try to make some money here and there (the thought of being a broker/reseller...seems to be very time consuming. I prefer to utilize my time with good friends, family and fun). I am here simply to focus on the lessons and mistakes previous domainers can share (or insight to why or why nots), and essentially use that vital info to build something meaningful and powerful. The money will come later. I not worried about $5.00.

You have you have an exceedingly good reason to put a hyphen into a domain name for it to have some value beyond regfee. The one i like to use for example is home-loan.com Sure it has a hyphen, but send that baby to me any day of the week. Its spliting two words that go together like peaches and cream. u and wire being split with a hyphen makes one grasp at why u and wire should go together. You really just end up with some type of brandable hopefull.

Jimmy MG feels the OP time put into the venture is worth $40 so your offer of $5 just proves his point.

If we count ALL the time we spend on our domains Johname, I don't think most of us would have any equity left!

My offer of $5 is self-serving, I feel it is worth more than that and I am trying to score a deal here!! :sold:

8. Please don't try to brand a DOT NET. LOL

You Can't be serious. You can brand any extension.
All the good .com domains are taken because of this domainer mentality.
.net is a great alternative if the .com is squatted.

Johname anyone would want the domain name home-loans.com with the hyphen but honestly thats not a good example because the words "home loan" is a term not a brand or would ever be considered a brand. Please give me some good examples of successful brands that include a hyphen and I won't say another word and by the way that "disclaimer" has a copyright. LOL LOL you should at least put HOOKBOX at the end so I get my credit. LOL LOL

and domainhacks I am serious that you should not brand a DOTNET and any company that tries always has the intention to buy the DOTCOM when they can afford it. I can't even think of one super successful "BRAND" that is a DOTNET. DOTNETS are the blacksheep and redheaded stepchild of the internet but like I said its just my opinion and that of the most successful naming companies in the world such as Brains on fire, addison whitney, tungsten branding and about 100 hundred other naming companies , but hey what do they know. LOL

Mercedez-Benz
Rolls-Royce

and as mentioned

Harley-Davidson
Sea-Doo

Why can't Home-Loan.com not be brand? Depends on your definition of brand imho - you could imho turn it into a brand - though it's not imaginative or creative and it's not what I think we could agree is a "brandable".

should not brand a DOTNET and any company that tries always has the intention to buy the DOTCOM when they can afford it.

Your opinion. There are plenty of companies on non .COM and many on .net. You're confusing LARGE companies with smaller companies. Major every day global brands are on the dot com but there are PLENTY of small businesses running successful outfits on .NET on a brand.

They may have the intention but in many cases it's simply not worth it. A small local brand is JUST AS MUCH a brand as a Coke. :imho:

Don't get me wrong.. I don't think hyphens are good outside of DE - especially if it is what I guess we're calling a "brandable"... but as far as the .COM argument? It's partially true but never say never. :)

The reason these brands have a hyphen is because they were created by the merger of two different peoples last names.

Harley and Davidson were the last names of the founders so they naturally put a hyphen in the middle.
Mercedes and Benz was first Daimler-Benz which was the last names of the founders but Daimler had to be changed because of licensing issues so they replace it with the name of Daimlers first car which was named the Mercedes hence the name Mercedes-Benz. Anytime you merge two names that didn't originate together you always put a hyphen.

Rolls and Royce again is the two founders last names which is why there is a hyphen and as for Sea-Doo it never started out as the company brand , they were named Bombardier after the founder and the product name was Ski-Doo because they made snowmobiles and started a second product named Sea-Doo in the 60s which was a flop until it was reintroduced in the late 80s after Kawasaki made the Jet Ski famous. The hyphen in the Ski-Doo and Sea-Doo name was placed to differentiate the two product areas Ski and Sea. Today, Ski-Doo and Sea-Doo are two totally separate brands.

The examples of Harley-Davidson, Rolls-Royce, and Mercedes-Benz in my opinion are bad examples to include in this thread because all of these companies were established in the 1900s before branding or "Brand" was even something that was discussed or even existed. I would love to see a list of brands created in the modern era that include a hyphen. The only time I believe it to be acceptable is when its the merger of two different last names.

I do understand the thinking that the term Home-Loans could be a brand but its not your typical brand name and would take an enormous amount of effort and money to turn into a brand.

I also agree that a DotNet can be a brand but in the context of this thread I was commenting on large corporations since the examples were very large corporations but yes absolutely a DotNet can be a brand on a smaller scale but I don't believe on a large scale.

coca-cola.com is probally the best example of a hyphen preffered brandable. The home-loan was only offer to the OP, who was at this point in the thread looking for some more general advice, as an example of a hyphen name that no one on the planet can "hypen kills it" bitch about. Anything can be a branable, it just that some names can only be a brandable.

Microguy has a great dot net brandable at MicroGuy.Net Check it out everyone
