I was wanting to create a social network, however the name is throwing me off. I would love anyone's honest opinion.

Thank you.:gl:

Anyone???

Any feedback would be great. Does anyone see value in this domain?

Pretty cool name to me!

"U" could mean "User" or literally "You"(as in the user)
Wire can obviously be tied to communication - information via a wire

FB started in a dorm, so if you have dreams, go for it!!

Just visited your domain...Not sure an Instant Page from Godaddy will be the greatest starting point imo though.

Best of success to you.

Go with your first instinct on this one.

There are many good names still available out there without the hyphen.

If your going for serious development, never consider adding a hyphen in the name. :imho:

As for value, I would say $0 reseller.

I would take a hyphenated .com over any other extension hands down any day.

There are lots of discussions about the pros and cons of hyphenated words. Especially when a name might not be able to be properly separated when it runs together. Such as this example I found online: sportsexchange.com is it sports-exchange or sport-sex-change?

Are you going to leave that up to the search engines to decide what traffic hits your site and possible what ads also?? Yikes! Your case is not such, but it is something to consider.

There are however some very successful, well-known websites with hyphenated .coms

One I can think of is e-Rewards.com, oh and you may have heard of Harley-Davidson.com too! ;)

I only gave you an opinion for the domain you already own. If you have the option of buying another name, then I agree with njsurfer77, do so!

The hyphen kills it. IMO.

E-REWARDS.com is owned by EREWARDS.com

HARLEY-DAVIDSON.com is owned by HARLEYDAVIDSON.com

These names were regged to protect their brands.

Hypenated domains may work with people who have superior seo skills. But to the average domainer they are worth nothing.

You probably have that backwards. The company is called Harley-Davidson WITH the dash. This is the same as Sea-Doo.

In the US sometimes the hyphen makes sense. Most of the time it doesn't. Now if you're German? Add a couple of words, a 24 and another hyphen and you have a gem.

LOL. Yes, it's backwards, but the point was both names are owned by Harley Davidson.

Funny...
Type in HarleyDavidson.com and it forwards to Harley-Davidson.com

Type in erewards.com and it forwards to e-rewards.com

I am not saying that hyphenated names are better or more valuable, I am saying they have their place. I am not even saying they are worth the reg fee.

Right now the name may be worth $0 to most buyers/domainers, but if you read his goal, he wants to develop this into a branded social network, not flip it.

His brand and or buyer will determine the value in the long run.

FYI ->> last-minute-reisen.net sold this week for $2728. Just look at the scroll at the top of NP

Just my opinion.

I love the diverse comments. I have for sure learned so much in my own thread, your insight is very valuable and appreciated. The other domain uwire.com is taken and it is dedicated for university news for publishers. I looked up on http://www.urlappraisal.net/appraisal/u-wire.com.html and it came up with a value of $18,094.93 (which is highly unlikely, yet I am a half glass full kind of guy).

Yes, but remember this is the appraisal section. We give possible values on the names as is.

Also, Harley-Davidson.com was developed back in 1994.

Alot has changed since then. Just saying.

Reading and absorbing all the info is how we all learned. :)

Never trust automated apprasials. They are a waste of time. You will get the most accurate apprasials right here.

Sorry, but the glass is actually empty on this one without any development. IMHO

Not sure who owns Uwire.com - but you could sell it to them. Or, depending on the IP with the name, you could pitch them a social networking site for student journalists, as a colab.

If you were to make another social networking site, unrelated to Uwire, then could also run into copyright problems with Uwire, depending on the legals etc. Not sure if Uwire is a company or more a open source platform. Have no idea. But a few emails to the .com would sort that out.

Another idea, just to throw it out there -- could be a money wire service. These cost the moon to setup. But maybe there is some type of affiliate program you can channel wire transfers through.

Then if people wanted to send money, U-Wire.com would be a nice easy to remember name.

That's my two cents, anyway.

i am guessing you bought the info too. Energy drink? You Wire your own car? YOU-WIRE.COM available. Feels no value without development. The non hyphen is a college comunicantion network, may be tettering on the edge of existence, but has a tm for college communications. Their texting abilities was cancelled

I realized that. My statement was put in the wrong context. Take out the "but". By that time and I was already a few Kettle on the rocks in. ;)

Gotta love Cocktails and Domains :tri:

Would something like "nuwire.com" be more valuable than "newwire.com" vs. u-wire? Whats your thoughts, again much appreciated on your posts. Just looking at some alternatives and longterm stradegies. There are also domains such as "iwire" or "iwire4u", curious if these are domains experienced lads stay away from and why.
