EDIT: A dummy's guide to registering .TRAVEL domain names:

1. Create a Travel website, it doesn't have to be professional looking, as long as its a "travel information website". The authentication process is very, very liberal. It seems like they want money asap.

2. Get authenticated at:
http://www.authentication.travel/register.jsp?type=U&ap=trap

Make sure you enter the URL of your travel site, or you will not be authenticated. I put down the category of "travel media".

3. Wait for authentication (takes 1-3 business days, you will receive an email with your UIN (number needed to register .travel names) if you are approved. If not, start over at step one and make your site more informative.

4. Go to Encirca or any other .Travel registrar:

http://www.encirca.com/cgi-bin/rgsys/bulkregtravel.cgi
Make sure you enter your UIN. The encirca system works out nice.

5. Log in, change your nameservers, and start developing them babys!

Notes:

Once you are approved, you can register ANY .travel domain you want, with no limits on the number of .travel domains you can own.

The site that you use to get authenticated in does not have to be the final site for the .travel domain. In essence, it could act as a shell site for your "travel company".

Reg Fee is Hefty ($100/year), but IMHO travel niche sites will do well with this extension.

MANY great names available, such as Jamaican.travel, dutch.travel, etc.

Names I got through Land Rush:

Algiers
Kiev
Norfolk
Raleigh
Plano
Belgrade
PanamaCity (best one imo, spring break)
Dhaka
sarejevo
Sofia
beirut
Helsinki
Tripoli
British
English

Post Yours :)

Besides, there is a scandal already going on. Someone used Namesbeyond.com to register many premium names TWO DAYS before the entire landrush.
Do you have a link to more information about that?

All the sites are being developed into individual sites. These domains, IMO, have too much potential to be a PPC page.

I doubt enforcement is going to be big... especially when .TRAVEL needs my reg fee money :)

Wow, all the top keywords are really taken by the same guy...seriously. :yell:

Careful all - this is an expensive investment and clearly high-risk.

I agree it's expensive, and it's definitely risky, but then it's the first time I ever hand-registered a dictionary LLL domain, so that's a decent gamble for me. :D

PS: I got a call today (Saturday) to confirm that my UIN is active and that I can get started registering ... that's a first.

Good luck but I would rather buy .pro at the same price :)

Anyone know any .travel registrars who refund $99 reg fee in the event of a revocation of a domain name?

Have an UIN but still my application is still in processing.

Cheers

Hi there,

Encirca does refund the money if the name doesn't go through. It is noted that the encirca system does have a flaw sometimes in regard to what name is still on the restricted list.

Cheers,

Interesting extension, good to see some effort being made to remove restrictions. Making up a site, getting certified, and paying $100 reg fee is still alot of effort to go to for a niche blue sky landrush registration.

My concerns would be .Travel is a long 6 digit extension and will only fit a narrow range of travel related keywords. Without heavy-hitting multi-sector keywords I think any extension will struggle to develop an aftermarket.

I'd echo sdsinc's comment about it making more sense to register .Pro if you want a fresh snow speculation in a lightly regged, largely unheard of extension. .Pro is versatile, 3 digits long as opposed to 6, and adds gloss, credibility and legitimacy to keywords in any sector.

I think .travel is very interesting i have to say.
Have a couple of developed sites and leave at that, see where you go.
Obviously for travel related keywords it's perfect. Goes without saying :hehe:
you don't want to be regging more than a few imho

.pro is another thread surely? i don't have any of these , but can see appeal, but just for occupations, golf, lawyer etc. I see it as very narrow, but good luck with both of these everyone.

I've been approved within one day.

Can I register a "reserved" name or will I get into trouble down the road?

Actually I've given up on .pro as well. I think both extensions are not good for speculation. For (serious) development why not but the domain should ideally be self-sustaining (pay for their annual fee).

Old news... it seems like the plan for the .travel extension to get out of debt is to open a huge land rush. Looks like the plan is working ;)
