EDIT: A dummy's guide to registering .TRAVEL domain names:

1. Create a Travel website, it doesn't have to be professional looking, as long as its a "travel information website". The authentication process is very, very liberal. It seems like they want money asap.

2. Get authenticated at:
http://www.authentication.travel/register.jsp?type=U&ap=trap

Make sure you enter the URL of your travel site, or you will not be authenticated. I put down the category of "travel media".

3. Wait for authentication (takes 1-3 business days, you will receive an email with your UIN (number needed to register .travel names) if you are approved. If not, start over at step one and make your site more informative.

4. Go to Encirca or any other .Travel registrar:

http://www.encirca.com/cgi-bin/rgsys/bulkregtravel.cgi
Make sure you enter your UIN. The encirca system works out nice.

5. Log in, change your nameservers, and start developing them babys!

Notes:

Once you are approved, you can register ANY .travel domain you want, with no limits on the number of .travel domains you can own.

The site that you use to get authenticated in does not have to be the final site for the .travel domain. In essence, it could act as a shell site for your "travel company".

Reg Fee is Hefty ($100/year), but IMHO travel niche sites will do well with this extension.

MANY great names available, such as Jamaican.travel, dutch.travel, etc.

Names I got through Land Rush:

Algiers
Kiev
Norfolk
Raleigh
Plano
Belgrade
PanamaCity (best one imo, spring break)
Dhaka
sarejevo
Sofia
beirut
Helsinki
Tripoli
British
English

That's a lot of money to invest on a tld rumored to be having substantial financial difficulty. Hope it's here for the long haul, but it is a huge risk for the money IMO.

Do people actually visit Beirut?

I do look into all the cities i invested in.

I believe that panamacity.travel has the real potential to be big, in 2009 spring break.

While I wish you all the best, there is a problem: "You can only register a name that is publicly used by, or associated with, your organization." My guess is you will have a problem hanging on to the domains.

All the sites are being developed into individual sites. These domains, IMO, have too much potential to be a PPC page.

Besides, there is a scandal already going on. Someone used Namesbeyond.com to register many premium names TWO DAYS before the entire landrush.

I doubt enforcement is going to be big... especially when .TRAVEL needs my reg fee money :)

Helsinki.travel looks like a great pickup, Sam! :)

I'm still curious as to why this is called a landrush.
Did they change the rules or lift certain restrictions?
I remember seeing .travel available to register a long time ago

They use to be restricted to ""You can only register a name that is publicly used by, or associated with, your organization."".

After you get a UIN, you can now register any name, not just one that is related to your company.

Best of luck with those names! If and when Godaddy offers .travel I may invest :)

Thanks, to cover my back, i registered English. So many nice country names available, if anyone has a UIN. I wonder if i can act as a local agent for .travel:

scottish.travel
jamaican.travel
portugese.travel
irish.travel
dutch.travel
belgian.travel
jamaican.travel

All available, but at $100 a piece, so risky :(
