I hoped this wouldn't be a total waste; so many other names are taken with hyphens in the middle, like tra-vel, po-ker, pok-er, domain-ing, domain-er, bank-ing, etc etc.

tra-vel is the proper breaking up between syllables... but I think trav-el LOOKS nicer and might have more appeal to an end user...

Or am I totally delusional, dreaming, out on a long and lonely road?

Yeah, I tried it without the dash, but was very surprised to see it taken. In multiple extensions! Guess I was too late by a few days or something

Hyphen is disliked between words, let alone syllables. You may get some traffic (which I am not sure about) but no great prospects for such a name at all.
