Transfering domains that are about to expire

Is there a limit to how close a domain can be to expiring, at which if you pass you cannot transfer it?

For example, I have a domain at directNIC that expires in 20 days. Can I transfer it to DomainSite? Or is it too close to expiring (which means I have to renew it at directNIC, wait, and then transfer it to DomainSite)?

I think it may be 2 months but I am not positive about that ;)

Thanks. Well, at least you are telling me there is a time limit... and if so, it is probably more than 20 days!

UPDATE:

Here's what directNIC said:

Yes, you can transfer the domain away within the amount of time.
Here's what I asked them:

Can I transfer a domain away from directNIC with 20 days remaining before expiry? If not, what is the limit?

So it appears you can do it within 20 days at least... I guess I am just getting impatient too quickly with this transfer I am trying.

I have successfully transferred a domain as little as one day before expiration. However that is the exception, not the rule.

Usually 7-10 days will be enough if it works the first time. EPP domains (auth codes) seem to transfer faster than .com/.net domains. I generally try to do transfers about 30 days before expiration. This way if it fails, you still have time for a second try, and maybe even a third. Different registrars seem to have different rules and policies on this. Check well before expiration just to make sure.

Nothing wrong with that, actually. By doing it least 20 days to even a month,
you or the registrar can try to resolve any transfer problems (knock on wood)
that might occur yet keep the domain name in good standing.

When I was starting out, there was one transfer from Go Daddy to Domainsite
where it began roughly 6 days before expiration. It was eventually completed
with 2 days left to spare, but you can imagine how anxious I was that time to
get it done with as little to no problems as possible.

Nowadays I know better. I start them at least a month before expiration.

Thats great - I did'nt know you could do it with only a week or two left, Thanks Guys :) That's useful to know.

The domain transfered! :)

So with ~20 days left I will still able to move it away from directNIC.

You can transfer a domain (com, net, org, info, us) even after it's expired so long as its status is still ACTIVE and it's not locked, etc. Some registrars have a 5 days grace period before they put the domain into registrar-hold and you can get away with a transfer during that time. I don't recommend waiting that long, but it's possible.

I think within normally 10 days the transfer will be finished! So i think if the name leaves 2 weeks to be expired, then it is possible to transfer the name!
