I found a 4 letter domain that I would like to register but someone has a trademark on the 4 letters (i.e. abcd and abcd.com). Can you still register this domain if you plan on doing something completely different from what the trademark is registered for? Some four letter combinations can stand for so many things.

It looks like the .net and .org are all registered under a different company then the .com.

I heard someone registering the inc.mobi and lost it (or might) to a company that had a trademark on inc. Not sure how that happened.

Any advise on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just decided it's probably not worth the trouble. However, I would still welcome any opinions?

If you have a use for it, go for it, as long as the use you'll use is not related to the trademark.

I think .mobi is different because it's branded to be the equivalent of a .com.

Yes, absolutely. Like Steve said, as long as your use is unrelated to the trademark holders'. You can even file for your own trademark if you wanted. Lots of terms are trademarked by multiple (non-related) companies.
