Hey guys
I want to trace an IP/Network Address and find as much information as i can about it..can anyone direct me to a site/tool that i can use to do it?
I already resolved the IP address into a "network address" or w.e you call it...but it doesnt tell me anything except for the company they are using [Internet company]
its
*insert random crazy numbers here*.tb.shawcable.net
so they are using shawcable...and they live in thunderbay [the extension tb] but i wana try to get more information
Also..just so i understand..how does IP's work? Each internet connection has a unique IP address correct? so shouldn't you be able to trace the IP to the location where that IP is being used? and hence finding the exact address? [i know you cant find the exact address...but why not?]

Knowing the IP does not mean that you have the keys to his safe box. Unless, you start scanning the IP, find open ports, look for services he is running on them, such as apache, mail, shoutcast and etc. Then find exploits for the well known services.
It's not gonna give you much if you don't know your business. Btw, all above mentioned is illegal activity and you can go to jail for that.

I am not talking about getting into a person's computer...i am talking about tracing an IP to see where its located [Address] and get as much information about the IP...not the computer...so basically..what internet company they are with...where they are located...

Because if an ISP did that, and made the information public, nobody in their right mind would sign up with them. Though it would help to increase accountability on the internet if punks knew that I could physically come kick their ass for spamming me ;)

so the ISP controls how much about the IP could be made public? then can they also totally hide an IP? [show no information abt an ip]

You won't find any more info beyond whatever you mentioned in your first post.

The only way you're going to be able to pinpoint the exact address of where an IP had been used, is directly from the ISP. Of course, they will not release that information unless they receive a court order.

You can use VisualTraceRoute to give you the exact location of the PC but this will not help much, because the real person/company can be situated in different country.

Well, yes and no. The ISP could, in theory, NAT all your traffic for you and make it so that anyone trying to talk to you would only see your ISP's backbone connection...but this would be inefficient and would break alot of things.

They can't totally hide an IP...once the traffic leaves somewhere outside of the ISPs control, they need a return address, otherwise, you'd request a web page and get nothing because the remote server would have no idea where to send it!
