Most likely it was the backlinks. The domain does help it's ranking to an extent, but it wasn't necessary either.

They didn't buy it to help rank high in Google.

I don't think they took my advice... I said they should make a toy portal site and feature all manufactures and charge for advertising. They could have all the advertising they wantedon the site for free. Such a site could become much larger than just the TRU site alone, IMHO.

Anytime you have have your competitors pay you to advertise on your site, it's sweet. And anytime you can advertise for free on a major industry portal, it's also nice. $4M is only a one time cost to by the exclusive rights to that domain. As an advertising investment, it's a no brainer if you know how to make it work for you.

And they seem to have their act more together now. When I first looked at the domain after they bought it and re-directed it to TRU, there were almost no backlinks. But today Yahoo sees about 500 pages on the site and 6,446 backlinks, INCLUDING at least one from Wikipedia. Without spending much time looking, I suspect someone has been working hard to get the site where it should be in time for Christmas. :)

it was forwarding to toysrus.com for awhile in which it immediately lost its ranking

and most of us here agreed that they were wasting a $4M domain, but we were divided on whether or not the purchase was still worth it

they took a step in the right direction. and no i don't own toys.com

Oh, by the way, it's only my opinion, but I don't think the fact that the domain has the keyword for "toys" is as much of a factor as some might think in ranking. I do think it counts for something, but the keyword in the domain alone is not going to get you good ranking unless there is little or no compitition. Good SEO will out-perform a poorly or un-optimized keyword domain most if not all of the time.

And I would not call a site with 500+ pages a "mini-site". :)

800+ and still indexing. Crazy generic and will surely top 3 in no time.
