CCTLDS: Approximately 32% of worlds top 1

Interesting Notes:

1. .COM as expected dominates the market, but its slowly losing market share to cctlds, at 54% still huge chunk.

2. .TEL with 13 is on pace with .ASIA's 100 after a one year

3. .ASIA's and .MOBI's prospects look dim after 1 and 2 years respectively. Only 235 and 112 respectively, compared to .TRAVEL with 93 but almost absolutely no domainer hype or marketing, and small amount of registrations.

Basically, with all that hype, .ASIA is almost as well known as well... .TRAVEL?!?

4. .MUSEUM, .JOBS, .AERO is a total wash. .MIL well most of it is army.mil or navy.mil.

5. .PRO doesn't look so hot either.

6. Surprised that .info takes the #4 spot by a huge margin over .biz. This may be due to spam or useless sites via bots, but still impressive.

7. .BIZ may have more numerically then .edu, but .edu's sites are much more higher in alexa ranking.

8. When .NAME is double of .MOBI raises a few eyebrows! $200,000 for flowers.name anyone?!

AFAIK, Alexa doesn't track mobile internet users. Thus the given number for .mobi would only have very limited significance.

Good point. I wonder if any online measures of traffic take into account mobile internet users.

>Asia is branded as a Global brand according to Dot Asia. They at the present do not promote consumer adoptions as other brands.

They did a good job with promoting businesses in Asia to use Dot Asia I believe.

It might take a a few years, but I think the strategy of promoting a global brand is BIG.

I didn't know there are so many .cat websites.

Do you also have Top CCTLDs % by Alexa Top 1m?

It would be interesting to to see a country list of the most used gtlds - but probably this is impossible to perform.

These are developed sites right?

What, if anything, does this have to do with tlds?

:D

About the .pro comment, there were only 6,500 .pros regged until Sep 08 so the number of .pros in the Alexa top 1m is 1 out of 141 regged. There are 77m .coms registered and 532,000 inclusions so the ratio for .com is 1 our of 144 regged. With .info it goes down to 1 in 376 regged, this is probably because of the low reg fee making it cheaper to do nothing with .info domains.

The .pro ratio is two factors offset against eachother, nobody wanting to develop them in case RegistryPro say it's not professional use versus high reg fees which make it expensive to hold them as domaining investments.

The strong showing of .info in absolute terms doesn't surprise me, it's easier for people to develop a simple information domain, you just provide search engine friendly content on a keyword, more .biz domains are going to have an actual business behind them so there are going to be fewer of them.

It's kind of early to compare .tel with other gTLDs, given that most .tels are not even live yet.

.tel is simply an unknown quantity at this point.

Thanks for the post/stats, Sam ... it'll be interesting to visit this in one year's time (my predictions; less and less will be .ASIA, ".MOBI", .NAME, and even .INFO IMHO - long, at FOUR LETTERS are completely passe)! :imho:

As was pointed out to me in another thread there is no alexa toolbar for mobile devices so the figures are likely to be a very significant understatement. All it would catch is people going to .mobi domains on PC's. If you look at the actual list it is sites like mtld.mobi and mobility.mobi which feature as some of the higher ranking sites.

That may well be the case but how do these figures show that if they are just one point in time?

I got some historic data, too lazy to find them right now, but I remember .com was higher at that point.

Cheers,
Sam

So you previously paid $10,000 or whatever Alexa used to charge for this data? Perhaps you could find it?
