Time Sensitive Domain Names

With the sudden influx of Olympic based domain names I began to wonder about other domains that are time sensitive.

What are your thoughts on buying an event based domain name that might bring you a good deal of traffic at the time but then what?

I suppose the same thought goes to people and their 15 minutes of fame. Sure people might be looking for some guy who is all over the news today but what do you do with that domain name a year from now when he's forgotten?

I have had luck with them. but they must be generic, like, olympicresults or even better, TodaysOlympicResults. they are short lived, but do bring nice revenue.

I probably wouldn't pay alot for one, but at $7 a fresh registartion isn't that much of a risk.
It just depends on whether you think you can monetize that domain quickly and profitably.

I wouldn't regard any of those domains as prohibitively time sensitive.

The Olympics come round every four years. You've also got the paralympics, the winter olympics etc..

Domains I would regard as prohibitively time sensitive would include reference to any given year e.g. film2009.com (which is being sold on Sedo). Mind you, domains like september2001.com or worldcup66.com etc would obviously prove exceptions to the rule. It's a matter of applying common sense, I guess.

This is really the issue. I think some people are really great at spotting that next flash in the pan. They get the domain get it up and get out with a profit. But it's like horse racing -- you gotta have the knowledge and the luck to make it pay off.

We got worldyouthdayaustralia.com.au about a year ago. Put together a min site & did a small about of SEO. As close as a month from the event, it seemed like we had wasted our money however suddenly we started getting traffic & ended up netting about $300 in a few weeks.
