Customs Lets Man In U.S., But Takes Bloody Chainsaw, Sword

BOSTON -- On the morning of April 25, Gregory Despres hitchhiked to the Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained by what appeared to be blood.

Customs officials confiscated the cache of weapons and fingerprinted Despres, but allowed him to enter the United States -- not knowing the gruesome scene about to unfold in the hitchhiker's hometown.

According to the article, the guy was a "naturalized" American meaning he left Canada and lived in the U.S. and was returning back to America.

Canada-born Despres couldn't be detained because he is a naturalized U.S. citizen and wasn't wanted on any criminal charges on the day in question.

So "naturalized U.S. citizen"s can't be detained?

What they meant was that he couldn't be detained without charges. The US Patriot Act allows government officials more discretionary powers with foreigners who act suspicious in any way, including temporary detention and refusal of entry even for those with valid entry visas.

Customs are WAY to strict to the obvious worker/student trying to get accross the border, and WAY to easy on the crazy people - haha.

I love 5 min from Canada and just stopped going because I get asked the dumbest questions and get pulled over for search, even on both sides (US and Canada).

I've been asked "How do you pay for your car if you're a student", "Maiden Names of relatives", "What school I go to", "What do I do at that school" "What do you do for a living" ,etc... Unless I say "Terrorist" it really doesn't matter.

I hate how anal people are getting, and then I see this crazy man get accross, people so are dumb...

I've heard about the story but first time I saw what he looked like. His looks alone is enough supicion to keep him held for questioning IMO. I'm not stereotyping him, but that's not the average looking gothic teenager (especially with those big bulgy eyes that are ready to pop right out of their sockets). Looks like a freak from a horror movie, except worse.

This is ridiculous that the US allowed him to enter the country, especially with all of the weapons he was carrying. The weapons and the stained blood on them should of been enough suspicion to hold him. What normal person is going to go through border security with a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained with blood. He sure didn't just get finished clearing out brush from a forest.

If that's not enough suspicions then I don't know what is.

but if we stopped him for looking strange for the fact thathe may -or- may not kill 5..or even 10 people... but we have laws stating we have to pat down little old ladies in airports while the potential islamists walks on by... we'll perhaps your right, I dont think the ACLU would sue for bias against anglo's

Yes he was an American citizen and has a right to enter the country, however he should of been held and questioned on why he was carrying so many weapons. The fact that he was an American citizen should of not been a factor in letting him into the country. I'm an American citizen but I still have to go through tight security when I go to an airport. We have to take off our shoes, coats, etc. to send through the scanners but I don't get a special privilege of passing through security because I'm an American.

I don't get how he could walk through border security with the weapons he had stained in blood and it's alright for him to enter the country without being questioned. Isn't that already enough suspicion that he did something? If he would of walked into the airport looking like that with those weapons he would of been speared to the ground, but since he was an American returning to the US that's alright for him to do??

If I was carrying those weapons stained in blood and looked suspicious of murder then I get a special privilege because I'm an American citizen so I can go back to the US without being questioned? That's ridiculous.

The article clearly states that he was questioned for two hours and that they 'employed "every conceivable method" to check for warrants or see if Despres broke any laws in trying to re-enter the country'.

I believe that putting all the money on closing up the borders will do a good job in neglecting internal problems even more. I also think it will make you even more distanced from other countries which in turn does increase the threat from the outside. International solidarity is always the best to fight international threats.

He was an american citizen, who could just as well have staid in the country instead of going abroad. Why not put focus on the internal social and judicial system who could have caught this guy into mental treatment/incarceration?

Does it matter much if foreigners takes your job inside your country, or if the companies outsource in other countries? Over here more revenues goes to the people in the former case.

Wouldn't the NO votes show that European citizens (the source of democracy) are finding it a worse idea? Or are you naive enough to think the voters did know a lot about the constitution and were not influenced by their general EU views? The money and work put on closing to the outside and opening inside is something getting more and more unpopular amongst Europeans in general (a few member states set aside).

Illegals need to stay in their own country and businesses need to stay right here in the USA. If I need something and I see one was made in China, and one was made in the USA, but the USA one is $5 more. Ill buy the USA one. If I call for support and its someone I cant understand because the compay out sources to India or something for the support Ill ask to talk to someone who can speak English better and that I can understand.

I had a PPC Search company call me to see if I would use their feed on my engine. I told them no and hung up. Why? Because she had some accent that made it hard to understand. If they cant hire someone that can speak English clearly I dont need to do business with them.

All these illegals complain they make more money here in the USA. Why is that? Because they dont have the guts to stand up and demand fair pay. The more that come here and work for less than a legal person are going to turn the USA into a 3rd would country.

From talking to someone daily who lives in the NL I believe they hate illegals there too. Infact its getting heated politically over it from what I hear. Now why would they want to vote for the EU constitution when it would make it easier for illegals to move there and ruin their normal life?
