Back links are very significant to rank better in the competition. Thousands of webmasters partake in link building exploits like forum link building, cross-linking, spamming and paid back links. And we all know how Google penalizes these websites. Almost everyone is conscious of Google Penguin. So link building has become very solid these days.
Let’s take into account three websites – website 1, website 2 and website 3. In three way linking, website 1 links to website 2, website 2 links to website 3 and website 3 links to website 1. So it is like a circuit of links.

Three-way linking has its pros and cons. After Google strengthened their policies regarding spam, many used methods like reciprocal links have become obsolete and a possible door for penalties. The three-way links logically stepped in the scene.

On the plus side, this is really a safer choice when it comes to your link building. Still, you have to follow the guidelines and only use this method inside a relevant network of websites, so the links you receive are still useful for your visitors. Further more, having the different websites on different servers increases the geodiversity you get in your network.

On the other hand, collecting links without relevance, just to get the numbers up, will still be suspicious for Google and even though the links are not reciprocal you still risk being penalized. Not to mention that if the links does not reflect your business, your visitors would soon be confused and lose interest in your site. Even if you dedicate a whole page for your links, there is still a chance that Google would not like that, simply because you have a whole page dedicated only to outbound links, nothing else.

All in all I get why this is a preferred tactic by many when they build their network of links and like many other things in life (and business) - if you do it right, then you will find it beneficial ;)

FYI, they CAN spot 3-way linking schemes most of the time. Kind of outdated - hasn't been a big thing for years now.

In regards to your question, as mentioned there are algorithms that are in place that can detect link trading for the purpose of manipulating the search results. You might want to check out the following article that gives the "pros and cons" and the effectiveness of using a 3 way link building for link popularity purposes.

Hello

In my own experiences, contextual one-way backlinks would be the best quality backlinks for any purpose, especially from niche relative authority sources.

nice post

Backlinks are very important to rank better in the competition. There can be 3 individual websites, groups or a huge network of websites. Usually in a network, the websites are hosted on servers at different locations.

I think the location of the link on page has an impact: linking within a paragraph is better than links at the bottom of the page or in a blogroll. Although website age etc. also has an impact - so does where your backlinks are from (such as .gov and .edu which are more trusted).

Three-way linking is a method of the past.

One of the rather (not so) recent changes is nofollow links, which generally used to be rather useless and discarded, but now are taken into consideration by Google. You should be conscious of utilising the nofollow attribute value to prevent possible penalties - such as pages with an exceptional amount of outgoing links than internal.

HTML5 tags, schema.org, microformats, open graph and microdata etc. are all aspects to look at.

This said I am not an SEO professional - these solely reflect my personal opinion.

The truth! Knowledge, a solid foundation and common sense moving forward are a future-proof strategy no matter what you're doing link-wise.
