Those asking for "rep"...

I by far am not one to be lecturing on ethics - my Ethics professors all hated me :'( I should have posted this (save thread-list space) on another message that discusses the subject (there have been many!), but I was too lazy to go looking back for any :hehe: However, I am posting it here, because I believe it is something that still needs learned; seeing how I still see it everywhere around here. Folks asking for, begging for, and even sometimes being so bold as to request it in their forum signature, "rep". For those folks, you might find this abuse of the English language and bad example of poetry (from a private, also "rep"-using, forum I belong to elsewhere) a usefull way to look at the subject:

Deja Vu...You asking too?
Ethics 101...Give not freely to some?
1..2..3..4...Do I hear "More! More! More!"?
Fe-Fi-Fo-Fum...To you, does this not sound dumb?
When rep is not given freely...It just sounds all creepy.
To ask for it so open and plain...Really is so vain.
As your "rep portfolio" grows fat...Remember you got it being a dingbat.
For those that truely give...All will know how they live.
Just to be blunt...For rep, don't ask out front.
Those that are too brute...I'll just go out and shoot!
<-- 8-XMy favorite line!

There are some cases when asking for rep is OK, as long as it is in the form of something like "rep appreciated", such as at the end of a long informative post. It may remind some to give rep who otherwise would not have.

Agreed.

It's pretty lame simply posting for rep or asking for rep.

Yep.

I agree though, saying "Rep is Appreciated" is fine, when a long, informative post.
But asking for it, not good. :td:

Also, as a reminder, when asking for such things as Appraisals, or anything for that matter, you cannot use Rep' as a Incentive.
Eg, "Please Appraise this - Rep given"

I'm kinda of the opinion that if you deserve rep, you'll get it without asking..

If you get rep from me, count yourself lucky as I have rarely given it out.. to me, it's something I reserve for those "special occasions" ;)

Especially when reviewing websites, which can at times be a lengthy undertaking, it's perfectly ok to add "if helpful - rep appreciated", it's the user's choice to give rep or deny rep. Many users are not aware of the rep function and/or forget about it, while at lengthy posts or lots of research, like for expired domain names, it's perfectly ok to "appreciate the rep".
It's a different story to bribe with rep or beg/ask/demand rep. I believe that as long as it's pointed out to ONLY give rep if the user truly believes that the poster deserves it, it's not a bad thing to do.

I'm by far not free of guilt here, especially at long posts or reviews i add the disclaimer in small [size1] "if helpful - rep appreciated". It's something i've seen across the board, including staff members. Thus, nothing wrong with it, if deserved, the users will decide upon themselves whether it's ok to give.

See nothing bad in asking for as many people even don't know this mechanism exists, I also don't believe you can talk someone nto giving you points if they aren't deserved.
