I think in 10 years we're going to see a very different internet where domain names don't play such an important role.

How do you see the system being replaced? You simply type in "google" and your browser goes to google.com or google.co.uk or google.jp depending on what it perceives you want? The subjectivity could be very problematic for more contested names. In addition, these lesser entities will need to be able to advertise an address in the offline world. The domain construct is perfect for doing that. Which is simpler:

Time & Life Building
Rockefeller Center
New York, NY 10020

or time.com? For this reason alone, plus the enormous amounts that have been invested in making monster.com, priceline.com, etc. into recognized names I don't see domains going away for a long while.

I still plan on .com being king, but I think the big "gainer" will either be .us or .net

In 10 years the same gTLD ones as now, but maybe a couple new ones added. dot-com will remain on top, buy maybe not by the same margin as the newer ones gain acceptance.

I think the "developed country" ccTLD's (.us, .de, .au, .uk, etc) will be valuable, but the less developed country ccTLD's will remain at the outside edge. sTLD's will stay as the small niche markets they were meant to be just as .aero, .museum, and .coop are now.

So, when it is released you expect Google.xxx, Amazon.xxx, Yahoo.xxx, CNN.xxx, MSN.xxx, eBay.xxx...........since these are the types of entities that have made .com what it is today?

IMO, in terms of relative gain (in popularity and value) between now and the next 5-10 years, .US is poised to be the big winner.

The simple answer, is;

In ten years, who knows?

Its just too far ahead to predict, fluctuations, market growth and decline, natural disasters, wars, etc. etc.

All of these could change the way forward dramatically....

As Lee mentioned.. who knows?!

In 10 years, domainning may not even exist!

Its something well never know, until the time actually comes.....

boy if I knew "how" it would change.. I certainly wouldnt be sitting on NamePros lol

Right now, its too expansive.. to many wasted space and way to many redundant places. With the flow of incorrect information, intentional (or otherwise) deception, fraud, viri, spyware..etc.. the web simply cannot stay the same and expect to truly evolve into what it is meant to be.... a Free Resource for all.

I can see a few things coming: More govt intervention to ensure the flow of "quality" and truthful (read: not deceptive) information. Two reasons for this are libraries are a thing of the past, but that information still needs to be available to the masses. It has to be valued and trusted from it's source.. hence the intervention on the federal or international levels when www2 goes live.

how exactly to resolve the domain issue, I dont know. they certainly want to limit the porn to restricted areas for parents, keep the factual completely seperate from the myth and have more "trackability" than is allowed in todays system... for safety and security reasons.

the end of spam isn't too far off i predict too. Once the harsh penalties come to pass, new software from Bill and others as well as cracking down on clone PC's by all ISP's.. by forcing all email to pass through certain ports and then through various ways through the isp would effectively block spam if the correct parameters are set up.

again though, the domain issue... maybe some type of web address thats more intuitive than an IP addy? really, someone out there has a good plan in their mind, and someone will listen.

I see .us and .info eventually overtaking .com in utility and value...

.com still number one, I thinK .us .net .info and the Indian cctld will be up there I think India could be very big. ONly need 30% internet penetration to be larger than all of USA or Europe. I agree too much money being spent to build commercial entities and to teach people to change it 10 years later. In 1970, they thought by 2000 people vacationing on the moon its nowhere commercially or safely viable a lot of things take a lot Longer to change then people think. We still have paper and probably always will and I know there are some futurists out there who will see some new way but the masses don't want what futurists see they are just understanding this way. Tech friends for 18 years have told me a MAC better than a PC but the masses would rather use windows even if APPLE is better I think Gates replied back to Jobs in the movie pirates of silicon Valley JOBS "We're better than you Bill" Gates " Yeah Steve but I got the look" .com got the look.

Hopefully the .xxx line was a joke.

THats just my opinion I could be wrong
