Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Yeah, dont be too quick to lose confidence because of these teething probs, remember that it's an evolving domain that hasnt even gone public yet..if there are any problems, Im confident they will get ironed out as is happening with the web proxy issue.

Totally agree. They will adapt to the market and they have shown a great willingness to listen to users and make changes. Fellow Kiwi phase111?

Totally disagree with your statement, look at my "join date" on left side, I'm not a newbie that came here in 2008.
I't s not hype and it's not waiste of money.
From the beginning I was 100% confident about dot tel investment.

Last week domain names were up and display webproxy url, I started to see less value on dot tel and so was a bad investment until Justin (telnic) post his answer to my question about webproxy redirect rather than name.tel that should be resolve before General registration March 24th.
So I'm now again sure that it is the new gold mine.

Not sure if it's a goldmine but an interesting enough off the wall opportunity to invest a few dollars within my budget for such things.

I have also been around - forever. :cy:

Hello Everyone,

Been reading alot about the .tel on Namepros and got double minded there for a second too all i can say is 3 things for 3 different reasons.

1) People who invested in .tel = Do not get rid of your dottel for noting incase you paid over US$ 300/- you have enough time for it to go up to atleast what you paid for.

2) People who didn't invest in .tel = wait till 24th march and then see the new system rather then predicting the future of .tel from now on

3) people who are against .tel = i would be more then happy if you could relax and let the domains do the talking if they are flop or hit.

people have invested alot of money into .tel if its to flourish or flush let it be noting can happen now and neither will the registry give back a refund.

let us discuss more about we got and give ideas to people rather then kill some of their dreams by showing them the wrong way and blaming registry for it.

if they paid, registry never asked them too. they made their own choice like me

i own www.shahid.tel which is my name and my name means more to me then 100 Million US$ cause i m proud to be who i m as i even own Shahid.me maybe in .com i wasn't there but i am happy and thankful for what i got.

Thanks

Shahid Khan

Just amazes me sometimes how some domainers just can not get out of their old mindsets. .......You can mention that .com .mobi let you setup any way you want... Well that is the problem when you are trying to create a standard....The success and failure of this tld lay with how fast and well it will integrate. Get it out to the iphone quick, and microsoft products.

Would anyone mind explaining to me how the location (loc) works.

It seems to automatically link straight to maps.google.com. When I saw the code plaggypig brought up for justin.tel it seemed to show just the raw coordinates (X,Y) rather than a link.

Reason I'm asking this is I'm interested to know if it is, or will be possible to link to your own site with a mapping api on it perhaps google or a local variation. This would fix someone elses question (a few pages back) as you could have the sat mapping loaded up as default on your own site.

Thanks

IMO, currently, TEL system is designed for individual use only. TEL page, obviously, prepared for few information contains in site.

What do you guys thinking about to have more function for enterprise uses.

1. Search functions is mandatory for every directory in the world... the good part and bad part of directory system is mostly depend on search engine.

2. Global information... I just thinking about if I owned Dell or Microsoft dot TEL. Do I need put www.microsoft.com in every pages for my employee?

3. Develop their enterprise theme. I don't think Dell would promote their employee contact point with this violet contact information page.

On and on, TEL is just start. I believe brainstorming this such system being most efficient and effectiveness for everyone.

Sorry, but Telnic does not have a lock on DNS or NAPTR/TXT records. Once these applications are developed they can be easily modified to access DNS records from any TLD.

Therefore, .TEL will (actually has) become totally useless considering that other TLDs will have this functionality along with all the other benefits of a real, fully-functional, and open TLD.

You are correct. You are missing the point of it is not standard or mandatory on the .com... Can you make that dns record on a .com, sure. But at the moment it would be hit or miss if you could find these records (some may have them; most wont). There is no uniform std on that side. (The same thought had crossed my mind too about just using my .com's)

When I am hitting a dot tel I know for sure what the records will look like and how to interact with them because there is a std.

For all the Naysayers and for those who are interested, here's what Dot Tel .TEL is all about. Great article discussing how the world is going to adapt this technology because of ease of use and communication with others socially.

http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/web20/66510.html?wlc=1237304081

Enjoy!

A quick excerpt of the article:

A Billion .Tel Identities by 2013

More than 1 billion .tel identities will be in use by 2013 if only one quarter of global cell phone users are included in .tel subdomains by their carriers. That depends on carrier adoption rates and on Telnic rolling out non-English character sets for the top-level domain (the .tel portion) and subsidiary levels, which it plans to begin by the end of 2009.

The prediction of 1 billion .tel identities is based on trends in mobile phone adoption around the world. Parks Associates forecasts that by 2013 there will be 4.5 mobile phone users worldwide. This compares to 3 billion in February 2008, when the International Telecommunication Union announced that the total number of global cell phone subscribers had exceeded half the population of the globe.

Cell phone access is within range of more than 80 percent of the world's population. The significance of .tel as a business accelerator and social networking tool will be most pronounced in developing markets, where 68 percent of cell phone subscribers live.

The prediction of 1 billion .tel identities does not provide a basis for forecasting the number of .tel domains to be registered by 2013. Most identities will be issued through cellular carriers and social networks such as MySpace . The number of second-level .tel domains registered through 2012 could stay below 5 million, before taking off in 2013 as third-level domain holders upgrade to brand themselves personally, achieve portability and gain direct access to .tel privacy and friending features.

they are just saying it will take until 2013 to keep people hoping and renewing for 4 years. When 2011 rolls around and nobody owns .tel and nobody knows what it is then domainers will say that they just have to wait a couple more years for it to take off, lol. No way in hell there will be 1 billion .tel domains registered. There arent even that many .com registered. No doubt that billions of people will be using mobile phones around the world but i dont see 25% of them registering .tel domain names. You could say the same thing about .mobi or anything else, that if only x percent of all users buy it then.... The problem is those numbers are EXTREMELY unrealistic. There arent even 1 billion people on MySpace or Facebook or anything. Most people on earth dont own a single domain name and dont even know what a domain name is.

I still don't really see the point in .mobi, it's a long and awkward extension to start with, the way the internet is going mobile, .com is sure to do everything .mobi can, so why would you want .mobi? Also, as a website, it has to compete with about 200 other website tld's...what .tel offers is contact info pure and simple..I feel a bit of de ja vu, Im sure we have discussed this before somewhere in the thread. >tel is not meant to compete with websites, it's supposed to compliment them if anything, something that .mobi wont be able to do long term (apart from with .tel).

Whoa! That is a little on the extreme (optimistic) for me... It is a good article but missing like step 1: we need good adoption of the domain from developers. This is where (dont make me say it) mobi hit the wall and failed.

I would love to hear justin tell us if he as been able to talk to samsung, Microsoft, google, apple... etc. I think a top down would be much easier and quicker approach then hoping popularity demands moving them.

i dont hate .tel or anything.... but its just really silly to say "this certain new TLD is better than this other one because it's a narrower focus."

that would ONLY ever matter if EVERYONE knows what .TEL is.... same with .MOBI.... people dont go "searching for .MOBI sites" - they search for specific things on mobile devices. just like NOBODY searches for .TEL sites - they search for CONTACT INFO, which could based based on .TEL sites.

could this change someday? maybe.... but i dont think some of you have any idea how big something has to get in order for some of these arguments to be valid. until then, this type of argument about "this TLD was designed for this" doesnt mean anything... and that applies to .TEL, .MOBI, and any other new TLD you can think of.

since the way people design their app from sequential to object oriented age agos. Currently, trend also move to saas saap and so many.

Tel also started on the great part of concept. But to reach that concept to the highest point, we may need lots more thoughts and hands and some forgotten of the first start.

As I also owned highly brandable dot TEL ;) , Telnic, just open up your system as much as it could be. I beleived there would have nummerous guys, included me, willing to develop and help you achieve this goals.

iphone .tel management app is under review with Apple.

next app to be upgraded to app store quality will be the native lookup app. "look ma, no web required".

all open source and available on Telnic's dev svn repository.
