Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

While you may store NAPTR records with any domain, with .tel you always know what you get. No advertising, no parking pages, no bullshit, just plain infos in the right format. I think, most people would like it (perhaps except some domainers).

Yeah. And those 59 second page loads are a blast.

How are we supposed to make money off the "plain" (also static) info website?

How are we supposed to attract advertisers (the ones who will pay money to list on your site) if the site is too plain (limited amount of info) for people in general to be attracted to, gets no traffic, and outranked badly in search engine by competitors due to lack of SEO methods?

How are we realistically supposed to make money from .tel then?

What if telnic server goes down for whatever reason (maybe electrical problem?)? Then all the .tel sites will go down too?

Personally, I think .tel should get rid of all the restrictions.

1. Those restrictions, as you call them, are necessary, and arguably beneficial. I really can't understand why people are hung up on the current design of the proxy page. Talk about judging a book by its cover!

2. How do companies like the Yellow Pages attract its customers? Obviously, it's going to be difficult, but it could also be very lucrative. Maybe some advertising agencies will start specialising in .tel directory services, who knows? Hmm.. I wonder who runs the largest advertising network on planet earth? :hehe:

3. Your .tel A record doesn't have to point at Telnic - your domain registrar can host it too, if they support TelHosting.

I'm still yet to hear any well thought out arguments against the merits of .tel - it seems there is still quite a lot of confusion (in both camps). If anything is unclear then I'd recommend reading through the literature on Telnic's website.

I think domainer's and techies should look at what the service provides to the wider community and how useful and practical that is, rather than worrying about little technical details that the public at large just won't worry about. If you look at what everyone else wants rather than just what you want, that's what counts. First rule of marketing- give people what they want and from what I've seen, people want and need this.

.Tel Monetization - "Money Making Model"

.Tel Monetization

In general, most people don't understand both the format and or commercial value of the .TEL TLD. As a result, thousands of people will be missing out on millions of dollars everyday!

That's right. If you don't use the correct monetization model, your .TEL will simply be 'Fools Gold'.

In fact, you should already be positioned with your revenue model and plans to contact advertisers in less than 45 days!!!

In view of this, there are several money making models that could work for the .TEL TLD.

Consider for example, YellowBook.com

Their revenue model consist of a devised "Pay Per Call" advertisers program which also includes driving inbound telephone calls and email leads.

Why is this type of revenue model perfect for .TEL domains?

pay-per-call advertising—meshes search functionality and on-the-phone interaction resulting in an appealing marketing opportunity for small-to-medium sized businesses—especially local businesses without a web site.

Check out the following stats for YellowBook:

"IYP searches account for 28% of all local searches and 31% of all local searches."

US online trends states the following:

1. Online advertising growth continues to outpace all other media
2. Online advertising will reach $21.4B this year and represent 7.4% of all advertising spending

At present, I am in the processing of finalizing my Pay-Per-Call model and will soon present to specific marketplace advertisers to join.

Please add your thoughts,

In my opinion, they should allow advanced users access to the entire DNS. If this extension has any hope of survival it will need to adapt and become much less restrictive in these areas. This would allow non-technical users to use the Telnic 'hosting' services already in place but appeal also to advanced users who are interested in total control and advanced development and don't want to use those horrendous looking .tel default pages.

RE: skins, that's down to the .tel community to request; as we are a sponsored top level domain, we will look to modify the .tel to the benefit and request of the community and the service. There is an argument that the skins being simple makes the service almost no cost to access over a mobile device.
Again, any questions, please shout.

Justin hasn’t denied the possibility of adding feature for customize template/skin of your .Tel domains. Packaging is also important in marketing product. Personally I think it’s important to add such feature, every .Tel page will be diverse yet simple to browse. All it depends how many of telsters request it!

I think that would be a good idea, but they should draft a style guide, and implement a strict approval process on new designs that get submitted. Wouldn't want the MySpace generation uglifying the .telspace!

FYI: A new Guardian article just got published.

Some useful info for you all, you may have read all this before??

You might think you can’t make money with your .tel domain name because you can’t host a Web site under it. But that’s not true! .Tel delivers a world of click-to-purchase opportunities, especially when used with mobile devices. The following list gives you a few ideas on how you can monetize your .tel domain name:

1. Increase Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - .Tel content is fully structured and published on the domain name server (DNS) rather than the World Wide Web. That makes it easily read and indexed by search engine crawlers, strengthening your presence in search results. This important SEO tool can help drive traffic to your Web site and may result in increased sales.

2. Attract Advertisers with Generic Industry Names – Register a generic name like hotels.tel, plumbers.tel, insurance.tel or locksmiths.tel, and you can create a revenue-generating directory. Each .tel domain name may have multiple sub-domains that allow navigation to local providers and specialists who may want to advertise on your site.

3. Collect Micropayments from Mobile Devices – Use your .tel to offer storefront services and collect micropayments for downloads, products or services. For example: a celebrity fan club site can provide news, chats or downloadable mobile content such as MP3s or ringtones.

4. Incorporate Premium Numbers for Voting and Betting Services – You can use your .tel to easily set up, integrate and manage time-sensitive tasks such as SMS voting for a favorite TV reality show (like American Idol) with one-click functionality. Viewers could use the choices under the .tel to vote for their favorite celebrity.

5. Market to Mobile Users with Vanity Name Numbers – A .tel domain can follow the same model as vanity name numbers such as 1800-Flowers.tel, 1800Lawyers.tel, 1900VoteNow.tel. Use these names to draw mobile customers with easy-to-remember domain names.

6. Publish a Global Directory Listing at a Reduced Cost – Companies spend thousands of dollars advertising in highly fragmented online directory services. The entries are expensive, restrict the kind of contact information published, do not allow live updating and offer local reach. By contrast, .tel provides a global online directory giving companies instant worldwide exposure. It aggregates all means of communication; allows unlimited, real-time updating and information management and increases search engine visibility – all without the need to build a Web site and for only the cost of a domain name.

These articles confirm what I had already figured out, but have added some extra possibilities for enhancing monetization.

Has.tel

I sat on this for five days, agonized mightily, had on my GA list, but decided to reg it today.

Yeah, I know there's a reason why it was still available at this late date, but check my sales page for Has.tel, and you'll see my reasoning:

http://www.has-tel.com

This dot-com had just deleted and evidently had some links, so I decided I had better get something up fast.

I'll be working more on it later today and tomorrow, so it's very basic. I have to leave for an appointment soon.

Any suggestions on what I can add? I'll probably use this basic template for my other .tel pages.

Thanks!

Added note: The term Has-tel is on page one on Google. I wonder why, and how long will that last?
