Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Why go to .tel when you can go to local.google.com for all local information including map, picture, review and contact information?

When I say "direct navigation", I really am using 1-800-Dentist or 1-800-Flowers as the business model. In fact, if more domainers understood this, I believe there would be far more excitement (and perhaps different .tel domain choices made).

Some directories will exist on the the other end of a phone line.

For example, with Tow.tel or Towing.tel, it's only 3 or 6 letters in the form of the generic name for the exact service needed that will initiate the phone call. An operator or automated phone system will do the rest.

The best case scenario is that Tow.tel and Towing.tel will become synonymous with roadside assistance and will be stored in mobilephone address books or simply recalled when needed.

Where else could you input three letters, anywhere in the world, and complete the phone call you need to make?

Thanks, Word Walker.

This is a perspective I hadn't considered, but it makes sense.

If I were a towing company (AAA?), I would want this generic domain so that I could establish my primacy in this market by featuring MY own directory, although a savvy developer could create a global directory of towing companies.

Everybody will get this when we begin to see advertising for Flowers.tel!

Wow excellent idea, so must think of useful keywords before registering like: doctors.tel, drugstore.tel, flowers.tel, restaurants, pizza.... everything that need to be urgent or useful to seek by a mobile.
But all are already taken so for the domainers here bashing .tel that don't believe on .tel power must re-think about it. D-:

CDM,
Thanks for the heads up! Repping you for the gem posted regarding name ownership and your other thoughtful points.
Called my lawyer and was advised to wait until .TEL whois resolves to insure legal ownership of domains.
All "sales offer" related posts from me are duly edited.
I will, however, post some of my names that I think I will own and offer for sale after whois is launched.
For showcase fun and commentary:

ACCOUNT . TEL
ACCOUNTS . TEL
LISTS . TEL
FILES . TEL
PROGRAM . TEL
ROSTER . TEL
MEMBER . TEL
COUPON . TEL
REFUND . TEL
ASSETS . TEL
MANAGER . TEL
OPTIONS . TEL
MINE . TEL
PER . TEL
TEAM . TEL

... while some which might be better ones are just overlooked... (I hope they will still be available at the time of general availability, have already made my small list of a few ones!).
Well, there will be many drops in three years, and I suspect quite a number of them won't even find a buyer then at a very low price.
I am very curious to see how the whole thing will evolve.

The biggest challenge that telnic will have will be to secure all datas entries from their DNS, suppose that there is a failure (bug, hack....) in their system how will they recover millions of datas, and if I have a huge directory that was paid by my customers for links they will get after me. I'm sure they have an excellent terms and conditions when people will use their Tel as directory. As you see like hosting a huge database, there is always need to have a backup because never knows what hapens. Also when upgrades will come (add more features) how will they manage it? Someone told me that there aren't any problem for loosing datas because it's DNS not hosting.... yes nut I'm not a DNS expert and I can't see how can they save all datas from all domains.

You have raised an issue which I wanted to raise too: I would hope that Telnic will provide a way for users who want it to backup all their data on their own hard disk or anywhere else. I would definitely not put a lot of information on a .tel page without making sure that one can republish the data in case of a major system crash.

Completely different concept - it cannot be compared, different uses. We'll see. But I find it quite interesting to follow the developments, and I am very curious to see how it will evolve.

Where's the Incentive?

Where's the Incentive?

In theory, .TELs resources are supposed to constitute the world's largest phonebook.

Am I right or wrong here?......

However, I can't see where an online consumer would give preference to a .TEL portal as opposed to searching for the information they need via a regular phonebook, or online phone directory.

In retrospect, It will take a savvy developer with money resources to make something unique out of something already very familiar...

Can it be done? Absolutely

.Tel

Spent the last day reviewing all of the comments in this very informative thread. My take was to at least get a few .tels that covered a variety of potential uses, were generic, single word terms that had significant Google keyword numbers. For a variety of reasons, I hand-regged these at Moniker.

Pink.tel - I wanted a domain that crossed many potential verticals (Pink fan club, pink flamingos, pink appliances, pink jewelry, pink pages etc.)

Jokes.tel - Blonde.jokes, Newfie .jokes, fat.jokes, skinny jokes etc.

Gossip.tel - Hollywood, celebrities, politicians, sports figures etc.

And finally...

Condos.tel - New York condos, Paris condos, London condos, Dubai condos etc....

I'll be actively watching how all of the folders work and some of the unique applications that will make it as end-user friendly as possible.

(PS. I also took Condo.tel as a backup)
B-)

What about the Tow.tel example given earlier?

Your car breaks down - you type "Tow.tel" in the URL address bar, and then when the contact page comes up, you press "SEND". You are immediately connected to a national (or global) live operator that can have a tow truck dispatched to your location.
