Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

I guess that is a matter of opinion and wallet size

If that's the case, then I got a good deal as I bought two US states for $300 a piece. I originally had about 8 states on preorder but then I freaked out about the payments and immediately asked DM for a partial refund. D-: Yesterday, I was surprised that I was able to preorder two very nice names for $20 at Domain Mons.

That's it for me though. $640 and four is enough.

Interestingly, Dynadot™ is not flagging pre-orders within its own system to prevent duplicate orders. I just checked and the system is permitting me to pre-order the same domain already on order. (:red:)

In the event that two or more people pre-order the same domain in-house, I wonder if they have a system in place to award the domain to the first person to pre-order. (:talk:)

They don't. They basically scoop preordered names up, then award them randomly among the pool of Dynadot folks who preordered the same name.

"There may be more than one customer trying to pre-order the same domain as you. If Dynadot gets the domain, it will be randomly assigned to one of the pre-orders. For example, if there are 10 pre-orders for a domain, each pre-order will have a 1 in 10 chance of getting the domain."

Thanks Ripley. Sounds like they opted for a quick fix rather than implement a more complex (at least from a scripting standpoint) and fair approach.

Hmm. If they're allowing you to preorder names twice in your own queue, I wonder if that would make it more likely that you would be randomly selected. :red:

Don't be so sure. There was a slight interruption in reporting available names yesterday evening as we pulled everything for the quiet period prior to GA. As such, some registrars reported no names available for a short period, which may have made it look like the name had been taken. Check again...

There are other registrars who do the same. I do not like it. The rule should be a very simple one: once somebody has preordered a name, no other customer allowed to preorder the same.

so i'm a bit confused and new to all this GA registration, after GA is open in less than an hour, will anyone be able to register a .tel as long as it's available or will the preorders immediately get assigned and show as not available

if I preorder now and don't get the name, will i lose the money and not get a refund?

Pre-orders are run in the registrar's queue. If you come in to the registrar and want to buy a domain while pre-orders are being processed, it depends on what the registrar does. It can put you in the back of the queue, or it can process you in parallel, thus "cutting the line".

Regarding refunds, I'm pretty sure that if you don't get a name, you'll get a refund (or in some cases a credit). But you MUST check with your registrar.

All,

Just a quick note in advance of GA to highlight this to you all:

http://www.prnewswire.co.uk/cgi/news/release?id=252455

We have signed:

iWelt - 8 million customers
BT - with over 28 million domestic phonelines in the UK and one of the largest telcos in the world
MySpace - with 130 million members

All of these will be advertising the .tel on their site and selling them (or in some cases giving or bundling) .tel domains to their customers.

I hope this starts to encourage you all of our marketing plans. And that this, as you know, is not simply just another domain.

Have a great day all, and the best of luck in your pre-bookings.

It's a money grab because Dynadot gets to keep your money as a credit.

It looks like the beloved Dynadot has gone over to the darkside.

Dynadot gives a credit for failed names, but does NOT specify this on their order page, not did I see this on my checkout page. They put this info on a separate page. Had I known this, I would have NEVER pre-ordered through them. It's a trick and a scam (IMHO).

They solicited me through an email yesterday.

I'm not at all happy about this and will be calling them later today.

This money grab is a new low that only a domain registrar could reach.

I would have thought better of Dynadot, which is supposed to have a sterling reputation.
