Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Im on this board. .Tel is such a silly, needless TLD. The idea of making a digital phonebook / calling card is great (and done) - now explain to me why it needs it own TLD?

Yes, you can establish a commercial directory operating on a basis of being paid to list a link or piece of contact information or set of contact information with a sub-domain for that purpose.

And if this contact information is stored in company-specific subdomains like cardealer1inc.boston.cars.tel, cardealer2inc.boston.cars.tel?

Same response - as long as you don't sub-delegate or sell off the sub-domain, you can put in there what you want to. Your commercial relationship other than that has no bearing.

RE: Better search, not quite sure what you mean? You'll be able to search in a number of different ways when .tel is live - it's only in beta at the moment. Especially when www.telpages.com comes onstream as well, which only indexes .tel domains. Add to this discoverability in Google, search via the applications we've created and the search box on the .tel proxy page, I think there are some good options there.

When will you be able to 'dial' a .tel domain and phone through to a pizza place? We'll have to wait and see on that one - people will think we're hyping things up, won't they?:)

Yeah, I meant that Google, for example, might connect its .tel index up with things like the Search By Number service, or perhaps even more directly as meta information around certain kinds of search results, i.e. when it believes somebody is looking for a specific entity. Lots of possibilities..

We'll know .tel is a massive success when Google obliterates your telpages.com service ;)

Will I be able to dial e.g. PizzaHut.tel (or just PizzaHut) on my mobile/voip phone in the future and be connected to the nearest Pizza Hut takeaway service to order a pizza so that I don't need to remember any telephone numbers only PizzaHut.tel?

I think that's the plan.

Right on the money. I would rather spend $300 buying .com domain names that way I at least know I would be getting a return.

To me this extension is quite useless and will remain as such. It will be interesting to see the first flip on DNJournal however.

It's already possible with this app, though it won't map your location to a local number.. it would certainly be possible for Telnic to build a feature to accomplish this though - I bet it's already somewhere on their to-do list.

Looking for something else (not even related to .tel), a word flashed into my head: "here."

So without much hope, I checked it.

Incredibly, here.tel was available!

So after agonizing about five minutes, I regged it (confirmed and in my account).

The old budget, you know, though I'm still within it.

Three billion Google; 7,000,000 - 11,000,000 keyword search volume per month.

At first, I thought, "This is way TOO broad, and probably too abstract."

Then I thought about subdomain ("folder") possibilities (add .tel, of course):

Go.here.tel

Click.here.tel

Find it.here

Buy.here

Sell.here

Pay.here

Ask.here

check.here

Shop.here

See it.here

start.here

welcome.here

Please.here (not really organic but directing to my Please? site)

Advice.here (directing to my Please? site)

FindAdvice.here (directing to my Please? site)

comment.here

iam.here

Youare.here

Weare.here

Loans.here

FindLoans.here

Mortgages.here

Ringtones.here

Artists.here

Writers.here

Money.here

Business.here

Businesses.here

FirstName.here

FullName.Here

food.here

shopping.here

Moms.here

videos.here

gps.here (or is that TM?)

Maps.here

Gas.here

hotels.here

dining.here

restaurants.here

Paris.here

and so on.

It's like having multiple domains in one, and they didn't cost any extra. Some of those terms (even with "here") have high search results on their own.

Now I'm finished regging .tel domains--what else do I need?

My two pre-booked domains are still pending; they are good, but nothing like this.

I guess others' reticence is my gain.

%%-

This domain (IMO) is well worth the risk, more so than the whoppers I pre-booked and didn't get.

(Here's hoping my registration wasn't a glitch ...)

Ms Domainer,

Nice one!

Hi All,

This is a great thread, I've been glued and it has brought me out of lurking.

My question is for Justin since I am not completely clear on the directory issue. Although additional clarification has been provided I am not completely sure I understand the restriction on directories and paid listings.

If someone were to create a directory-type .tel then where can they charge for listings?

You said:

the restrictions are that you are not allowed to sub-delegate the management of that contact information to a third party,

So I take this as meaning, if I own the directory, I have to run the directory. All of the entries must be managed by the directory owner.

and:

nor are you allowed to sell on third- or lower-level sub-domains (which we call folders for ease) to third parties

So using the hotels example, the possibilities are:

hotels.tel
- can I sell listings here?

nyc.hotels.tel
- can I sell a listing to Hilton Hotels in this folder?

hilton.hotels.tel
- can I sell this sub-domain/folder to Hilton hotels for their listings? (for me to add their listings, so I am the manager, not third party)

If not "sell" then "lease", "rent", "charge for", etc.

I think it comes down to, if I had phonebook.tel (which I do not) then could I sell listings in that directory to people. Like the Yellow Pages, there are categories (which would be the sub-domains) and then businesses listed in those categories. The Yellow Pages charges for these listings. Do the restrictions limit a .tel owner from doing this?

Thx

Upon further reading...
It looks like my inquiry was replied to in another thread.

From what I can see, it is allowed to create a Yellow Pages type of set-up and charge for listings.

If I am incorrect, please correct me.

Thx

Taking a page from your book.... I just reg'd

Ms Domainer edited out specific domain names.

;)

I'm done now.... :hehe:

Awesome!

Glad to help!

The plural actually works very well here.

If you have a good keyword, the subdomains should work very well.

I just regged some dot-coms so that I can set up a PR "Here" page on the the web:

Here-tel.com (HereTel was already regged).

HereInformation.com (Blah, but descriptive)

HereAndHere.com (my favorite)
I'm not going to set up the page yet, not until .tel goes live.

I think this kind of threads create only resentment. Ill-informed people take it as a conspiracy theory and start inflicting injuries on themselves more than they would in normal course. :imho:

Yes, this could become somewhat of a killer application. It's indeed a very clever idea to open the DNS to phone entries. As nobody needs to remember IP addresses thanks to the DNS, the same could become true now for phone numbers.

Almost all countries worldwide are registered, I ve check (france, spain...) so these last U.S states can be goldmine, GEO domains are great value.

I've got mine T A H I T I .tel (it's where I was born) I also have T A H I T I .pro so will use together in future.

I couldn't wait general as it could be taken before because it's highly sought after (all Tlds with same name have been taken)

Now that I've registered my .tel what is the url or where can we manage links, contact information... for that domain name? Should I wait to receive instructions and login pass for admin area from my registrar?

Resentment for whom? I feel sorry for all those people who spent money in the past 24 hours on this TLD.
