Any recent sales of 5N.com? I got a high $xxx for one of my 5N's from a chinese domainer, should I take it or should I push him to raise his offer?

If it has "95" and/or some repeats, it may be more valuable. Numeric domains with "95" sell very good.

Man I remember back in 07 when I started, could still buy NNNN.com's for like low $xxx. One of the best investments one could've made back then surely? Why did I not do it lol

1
•••
in December 2009 they could be bought at $400. even on December 2010 they were at $600. 2011 they were going at $800, 2012 $1,100, 2013 $2,500 and in 2014 they more than duplicate in value going for at least 5,5k.

one of the greatest investments for sure, and confirms the old adage that the best deals are made where the majority isn't looking.

"88" always seems to be good numbers in Chinese. Does not know the meaning, but sure they have some good meaning for it. Congrats

Totally agree with you. Lets see whether we cab see NNNN.com hit 10k in 2015. However Chinese domainers are also investing in NNNN.net & NNNN.cc domains these days.

I am studying Chinese atm, so I can tell you that 8 means fortune/wealth/prosperity in Chinese culture. So for example a business will pay a lot for the 88th floor of a new skyscraper, and rich businessmen in Hong Kong will pay loads to get a vanity licence plate with only 8's, and many normal people will also try to get phone numbers with 8's, schedule important business meetings on the 8th and so on.

Chinese is a tonal language, so many words are the same, but with different tones. 8 is pronounced as "ba", which sounds similar to the word for wealth/fortune. All the numbers have different associations in Chinese, based on what words they sound similar to. This is why numericals domains are more meaningful for Chinese buyers, and it is normal to have Chinese sites with number URLs. Sometimes I see people saying that the Chinese buyers are only going to sit on these domains, but actually they develop sites on them/resell them to endusers.

Yes ,you are right.
( I am a hongkonger , I konw chinese and a bit english.)
8 is "八" in chinese ,"八" pronounced as "發" in chinese ,"發" means "rich / will be rich / can get so much money"

I can also tell you the meaning of other number:
1 , 2 = "易" = easy
3 = "生" = living ,live ,real ,produce , generate
4 = "死" = Dead
5 = "唔/不" = no , not
6 = "六 , 六六無窮" = Endless
7 = no Special meaning
9 = "久" = long , eg. long time

so ,
28 = easy to be rich
38 = generate money / to be rich

so we like 2,3,6,8,9 and do not like 4 ,as it means Dead

Hope can help

Should be helpful info for those interested in buying numerical domains to resell to the Chinese market:)

So 58 would be bad right? (since it means "not rich").

Also, as I know, in Cantonese Chinese, 7 ("chat," can sound like ridiculous/stupid) and 9 (gau, can mean something like really stupid, i.e. on9) can also be bad? Both are used as foul language in Hong Kong. Not sure how they work in Mandarin though, and how they are perceived in domain URLs.

WOW ,Your chinese is so good ,as you know some Spoken chinese language ,even Cantonese .

back to topic, 58 is not good if compare to 28 , 38 ,68 etc. Yes ,58 can be explained to "not rich" , but it is one of the meaning

#1039 is just some few examples , one number can be explained more than 30 diff words in chinese .

just like "9" . "9" can be also pronounced as "狗" in chinese ,"狗" means "Dog" in english . "Dog" is not a good word in chinese , someone like to use this for curse . eg. u are a dog

As for "on9" ,only local HongKonger like to use this word , even some chinese / H.K. people don't know what is "on9" in written . That why I am so surprise that you know this . Are you a chinese /hk person?

7 , 9 ,on9 ,on99 ,on79 can pronounced as " foul language" in Cantonese and HK , like FU_K in eng , but for china ,it is not a foul language. There are some diff between Cantonese and Chinese .

My english is poor , hope you can understand :)

what about 35? it seems to add value to NNNN.com domains.
for instance: 9135.com: $16,000

apparently there are 2x meanings in some of these with Chinese.
example = 520 is a term of endearment. (in code)
5 = me
2 = like
0 = you.

looking for an official ''hyphen thread'' .....must be one ..
interested in relationship of NNN's and hyphens together ....

also none of these are absolutes. but generalities.
example, the biggest domain marketplace in China is 4.cn.
4 is obviously not so unlucky because it has the top site.

another domain snagged by registrars: 1280.com

expired at Register.com and should have been auctioned at NameJet (The Web.com group seems to keep prefering listing at NameJet and not at SnapNames their expired domains).

anyhow, the domain was not allowed to go to auction as far as i know, but was moved to Enom.

it had only about 60 backorders the day before the deadline to bid but on the last day the backorders jump above 120, as it's usual, and the max bid went to $9K.

this is a blatant wrong action from Register. where are the extenuating circumstances for holding a domain name? where is even a complaint form at ICANN for this matter? no one knows, no one cares :)
