Love him or hate him

... the "king of domains" makes some interesting points. :]

RS quote
I have another dream. Maybe already a reality. The day that domains have more value than all the real estate in Manhattan. Folly they yell. Foolish they scream. Ridiculous they clamor. Condescendingly they argue with you. Accusatory in their tone. Mean in their spirit. But through all that, they are wrong. SCREW THEM.

It is very interesting that Rick is echoing the seminal works of Al Ries and
Jack Trout to the nth degree by saying this.

Ditto. And I think we need to relabel "The King" to "The Jester" because I have a really hard time taking him seriously.

Well, when I read it ..... I felt as he really did not say anything real..... just "Screw Them".

And, so what? I thought when I got to the end he was going to say he was going to do something about it.

Okay...The over the top hype, the outrageous ego, and the dubious taste in shirts, aside...(lol)...

...I do like one thing about Rick:

He sees domain value as about the value that a domain could/will have in the hands of a serious business owner that is building new value into the future by building/expanding a business.....ie the real value of a domain lies in the part that domain will play in helping a business create new wealth into the future.

That's a value-perception of domains SO far away from the traffic/clicks/PPC revenue x 10-15 multiple of domain value that is often used in the industry.

It says, for example, 'this domain will help you add, say, $50m in value to your business over the next xx years....So, this domain is worth, say, $2m (4%) to your business now' (when, say, 15 x current parked revenue may only = $150,000...).

Put this way, 4% of new wealth doesn't sound like a high price to pay for that domain....but, you get a $2m sale.

...And, the deal may be structured so that the buyer pays, say, $1m cash now + $1m in, say, 3 years time, when the business has grown (or, even, a % cash payment now + a % of new wealth the new owner's business creates).

Essentially, Rick's sales strategy is to de-couple the value of the domain from current base metrics - and, link the value of the domain to future incremental wealth that a new owner could create with it.

Its the key to stratospheric domain sales prices - IF you can make that case to a potential (end user) buyer who has a growing business.

Why is he full of it? He seems to be doing well for himself/business.

From what I've seen, Rick seems to be all about the short term gains (is is close to retirement after all) and doesn't look at the long term damage he does to the industry.

That said, I've suspected for years now that TRAFFIC and associated hype is more about his failing sense of importance within the industry. Back in the day when he went by "WebFather" he had the sense of knowing something that most weren't aware of, and rather than truly capitalizing on it, he decided to go the other route and publicized it, I would guess for the sake of feeling important and superior (whether or not he was aware of this is debatable.)

So for a couple years TRAFFIC was an important show, never for the content of course, just for drawing large numbers of like minded people together, which to Rick's credit was great. However now we see that TRAFFIC is waining, other shows with better production value are arriving on the scene and the allure of attending shows falling in general. It would seem that "The King" is starting to become more and more desperate, the messages more over the top, and people are starting to question, ridicule and mock someone that was once untouchable. The curtain has been drawn back and we now see the little man with all the leavers and buttons, not the show with smoke and lights as was always intended.

What are the long term damages and how is it that he doesn't see it?

Never heard it put quite this way. Very well said.

I hear he is considering planning a domainer only, no sponsors etc, conference to discuss what to do about it.
