"Today's announcement is more ambitious than any single 'Google Phone' that the press has been speculating about," Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said in a statement. "Our vision is that the powerful platform we're unveiling will power thousands of different phone models."
"The platform is every piece of software you need to build a cell phone," added Andy Rubin, Google's director of mobile platforms.
The approach has already been endorsed by 33 companies who make up the new Open Handset Alliance, including some of the world's largest wireless carriers and cell-phone manufacturers. The alliance will also be announced this morning.
Rubin said new phones built around the software will be available in the second half of 2008 from Advertisement four major manufacturers in the alliance: Motorola, Samsung, LG and HTC.
Peter Chou, chief executive of HTC, said in a statement that the new software will create "a new category of connected mobile phones that will change the complexion of the mobile industry and re-create user expectations of the mobile phone experience."
Rubin said eight carriers have agreed to ship handsets based on the Google platform: Sprint and T-Mobile U.S.A. in the United States, NTT DoCoMo and KDDI in Japan, T-Mobile International in 10 European countries and the United Kingdom, China Mobile, Telefonica in Spain and Telecom Italia.
Unlike Microsoft Windows or Internet Explorer, the mobile operating system and browser built by Google will not carry its brand. Indeed, it's possible that people who buy the new phones will have no idea that Google is behind their gadgets.
Rubin said Google hopes to make money by increasing the number of people who are exposed to its Internet advertising. Currently there are about 1.5 billion people in the world who can see Google's advertising on personal computers. In comparison, an estimated 3 billion people use mobile phones."
