The first name ever registered was indeed SYMBOLICS.COM, but a little known fact is that NORDU.NET is actually the oldest existing domain name. It was created by the registry before domains were able to be registered and it still exists in use to this day.

Of course, there must have been some criteria for who could get a particular name. You couldn't just go and register ibm.com if you weren't related to them.

Hmm... *wishes he had a time machine...*

It's amazing how long it took for the first 100 domain names to be registered (considering the fact that domain names were free at that time)!
