Background on the free ipod referral deal:

You might have heard about these sites. The most popular gift, an Ipod, is offered by a site in exchange for a member signing up, completing an offer, and finding 5 other people to do the same. The offer involves a deal such as signing up to a free trial of Blockbuster's DVD by mail service. The offer is cancelable so it costs nothing to join. This concept is not a scam or a pyramid scheme, just the latest in internet viral marketing.

Numerous fan sites and message boards testify to the success of these sites. I myself have recently completed one of these sites and the gift of $275 is in my account now.

Message boards have often come together to form a conga line around one of these sites.

The concept:

The initiator lists himself and members also interested in the Ipod follow by signing up through the initiator's referral link. Once that person in line has satisfied the site requirements the direction of new inductees work on the second person in line.

I am starting a similar conga line here but I want to modify it to benefit more ppl.

- 5 offer completions are required for a free Ipod, however, in this conga line each member is allowed a maximum of 4. This is to encourage members to seek help off the board. (I completed another site by simply offering $5 to each person who signed up under me; worked like a charm)
- The forum currency system is an advantage none of the other forums have. When inductees start slowing then those at the top of the line can start offering $NP as encouragement to keep the line moving.

Yes, there is a strict rule about referral links in sigs. There was a big discussion thread in the "Improvments/ Suggestions" forum about it a while ago.

I thought so.. I suspect it's ok to direct them to this thread tho as it's a sanctioned thread. Tho putting your own link in your sig would be a no-no.. not to mention not being fair if you try to "skip" ahead of the line, so to speak!

Right, you're welcome to post a link in your signature to this thread. That's not a bad idea for everyone "in line" to do to move things along.

Let's try to avoid direct referral links in signatures: 1) per the NP referral links policy, and 2) wouldn't it be disappointing for a fellow member to sign up through a signature link and be excluded from participating in the conga?

Lots finally talked me into giving this a try, and hopefully it will work without filling our community up with spam and affiliate links. Keeping it contained to a single thread is a good compromise.

I'm testing out advertising the freeipods link on one of my popular sites. If there is good response from it I'll share some of those leads with NamePros memebrs in the conga line here. Will keep you posted.

I agree.. otherwise, with a direct link to your own referral you're effectively jumping ahead of the others in line.. not fair IMO.

And to get people to click your links in your signatures... you could add the
" 500NP$ to the first 5 people..." or something along the lines of the 500NP$ (can be changed as to the person who is up and what they offer)

Hellfear - one is enough - I know there will be a review after the offers have been completed. IPs checked out. Stick with the one account per household rule.

Edit: Okay how about printing the Wired aritcle and presenting it? Could solved the credibility problem.

I was going to fetch the NYT article but after rereading it I see there are some skeptical notes that would make paranoid parents reach the wrong conclusion.
