The elections are coming...

Hi guys,

Thursday the 3rd of May is a big day for the future of Scotland and the UK as a whole. The Scottish elections could see the SNP (Scottish Nationalist Party) take power in Scotland from Labour. The consequences of this will mean the 300 year old Union between Scotland and England will be broken, if the referendum is successful, which would mean a break up of the UK by 2010.

As you could probably guess, I am a die-hard Nationalist and will be very pleased to see the SNP in power come Friday morning, but i was wondering what other UK members think about the upcoming elections?

I did my Welsh Assembly vote by post a few weeks ago.

The next day I hear Labour may go into coalition with Plaid Cymru if they fail to get a majority. (Plaid Cymru is Wales' nationalist party for those of you from distant lands).

I voted for neither, but this would have made me vote Labour on my regional vote- I'd rather Labour control the Assembly solely than team up with those socialist nutcases.

You'll be voting yes in the SNP's referendum then Kev?

I personally will be voting for SNP come the elections on Thursday but am undecided on a referendum vote. The main reason I have decided to vote SNP is because as things stand I would never vote tory and the way things have been handled the last few years with regards to migrant workers and the move away from actually helping the workers (it was the unions that created the labour party). Labour have only made it easier for workers to be screwed over. They have also voted in ways which cost pension funds millions while voting themselves pay rises at every opportunity.

ye, i will be definitely voting "yes". if the referendum were to happen today, i dont think it would go through but once the SNP get into power and have a greater influence, i can see it swing towards "yes"

the main reason why people are voting SNP is because England want to dump billions of pounds worth of nuclear missiles on our doorstep, continue to drag us into an illegal war, use Scotland as a testing ground for new policies etc...People of Scotland are finally waking up to this fact and the quicker we become independent the better :)

its not just the Independence issue that is affecting my vote. I agree with neary every policy they have

- Stopping student debt by dumping the "Graduate Endownment" which would save me ยฃ2,500 ($5,000) at the end of my degree
- Extinction of the council tax and introduce a 3p in the pound tax instead meaning 500,000 OAP's are untaxed and lower to middle class families will pay less
- ยฃ2,000 grant to first time home buyers
- New business grants
- Immediate withdrawl of troops from Iraq

while london labour want to use all this investment to renew Nuclear missiles we will not use???

they are in for a trouncing come thursday :) SNP have a massive 8 point lead so it seems we will be waving Blairs poodle (McConnell) out on friday morning :kickass:

i know...one of the closest elections anywhere in the world ever i think!
although, 100,000 votes were void because of the complicated ballot paper and since they were read by computers, they needed to be flat to be counted :|

a victorys a victory but it was a great day in the history of our country :kickass:

He means the war in Iraq when saing "Illegal war" as some say that it is illegal.

I really dont see why Sctoland would wish to be independant, I can't see how it would benifit in the long term.

SNP win, and the Labour are considering a lawsuit apparently?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6629093.stm

And crap, it could be that Plaid Cymru form a coalition with Labour... now that'd suck. Plaid Cymru's policies is to reduce taxes heavily, and increase spending heavily - which is either a lie, or will cripple Wales. (And another of their policies is to also force the dying Welsh language on us all).. this sucks :(

ye, looks like a case of sour grapes :hehe:

Plaid's policies seem to be similar to the SNP about reducing taxes and increasing spending but i suppose we have North Sea oil to fall back on which the UK keeps to itself (about ยฃ1 Billions worth a year or $2 Billion )

It will be very interesting to see how all this pans out :)

GRR @ Plaid. Those socialist nutcases would be the death of Wales.
Sadly though, the Lib Dems seem opposed to coalition:

and I can't see Labour asking the Conservatives.

Very true Sid. And thanks for the link to that article... although that is worrying. I was hoping for a coalition with anybody BUT Plaid - now it seems it'll be Labour and Plaid :( Bye, bye free Wales...

seems nobody wants to form a coalition with Labour in Scotland so the SNP just need to convince the Lib Dems (who support most of the SNP's policies apart from Independence) to join them with the two green MSP's (who want to be with the SNP) which would be enough to form a ruling government or else, a new election would have to take place :td:

Another election? Ah, hopefully that won't happen.

Kev, what's the time-line that the SNP want to become independent? And do you think it'll happen (as expected?) if a coalition is formed?

some parties such as the SSP want independence straight away but the SNP want to earn the trust of the people first before deciding what to do. In the first 100 days they want to:

- Publish a bill for Indepenence
- Give the scottish parliament immediate control of North Sea oil and gas (probably the only reason England wants to stay with Scotland)
- Give patients "contracts" on waiting list times
- Oppose plans for renewal of Trident Nuclear weapons which England wants to dump in Scotland
- Withdrawl of Scottish athletes from a UK based team for events such as the Olympics/Commonwealth games in favour of a Scottish team

amongst other things....

2010 is the target date for a referendum...it cant come soon enough in my opinion after Gordon Brown (future UK Prime Minister) said he wouldnt work with an SNP government! what an own goal that was for him and Labour :hehe:

Sounds good :) And that sounds a pretty active first 100 days. It'll be interesting to see what happens from now on with/in Scotland. :)
