A little nonsense now and then, cherished by the wisest men. Of course it's funny for people in the know to look at these things with a grain of sand and consider the guy an idiot. In this case, you all are probably accurate. The fact that he is using Microsoft names is a bad idea to start with if he knows anything about domains. Most likely he bought them thinking that anything with the popular Microsoft name should be worth millions. I have often wondered though whether such a marketing gimmick is a profitable one in some other non-trademark cases. Yes, the theory sounds stupid, but so does buying a kid's ghostly grandfather at first glance. Would be an interesting experiment if nothing else, and maybe that is why people do it, to try it. If you don't ask, you don't get. So while I don't think that everyone is doing it for marketing reasons, like the guy in this thread, I have to wonder as I said whether there are some who have that in mind.
