For what little this is worth, years ago - when the dot com bubble was bursting (circa 2001-2002ish) - I waded into buying domains in domain forums and other venues, where people were holding the equivalent of "domain fire sales" or "going out of business sales". I had cash due to my other business.

Again, FWIW, I was very targeted in my acquisitions: one word, "industry / trade / business defining", .Org domains. Think: manufacturing, design, agency, etc. People thought of .Org as second or third rate, so many went cheap.

Again, FWIW, I was careful about cash flow management. Always. No fire sales for me, even in bad times. Which allowed me to hold onto a collection that I weaned over the years. (Yes, I had my geo-targeted .com domain era. Argh.)

Now, 20+ years later, times are good. For most of you it would be "really good", but for me - over the years - I'd had very flush times and not-so-flush times. Long story. Not (always) my fault.

Lesson? Manage your money. Hold cash for opportune times. Be targeted. Know you markets. Don't buy the BS or hype. Don't believe everything you read.

Domains that I paid <$1K in 2001-2002 -> Sale price? 30x, 50x, 90x, +++ (You don't need to know. Just follow the advice of FS's post.)

Also, it has ALWAYS been the case that people who attempt to make coin selling their domains in domain forums are, for the most part, doomed to failure. If that's you, then you don't stand a chance. Spend your time and money on something else.

FWIW, my motto has long been "Good domains sell themselves". If you have to post about how great your "for sale" domain is odds are it's low grade, highly speculative, very little promise of profit and more promise of wasted time and money . . . junk. If that's you - touting the great domains you are attempting to sell in a domain forum - you are already sinking. Bail out. Move on. Chances are that's what is actually happening. Not a "great domain for sale" but "please, oh please, take this junk and financial drain off my hands." Sad but true.

Lottery tickets and lottery ticket domains are a waste of time and money, but if that's all you got - the lottery ticket mentality - I'll be seeing you . . in the gutter.
