sometimes life gets in the way that lets you forget to renew your domains... unknowingly when you checked on it... these are already taken by other domain drop takers... then the worst thing you know is that some of these were bought at a very handsome higher price.

I always wonder- Why & how the buyer did not notice the domain earlier when the domain was obtained by the owner?
Why it is only sold after it was expired?!

I agree. because 15 years back $2500 is about $20k to 25K of today's value. So it was not bad at all, but one can learn from this is that patience pay's well, because if you will sell this 4L today then it could easily bring $1M+

Expecting money double in every five years, it is not only about inflation but you need to see the trends and markets etc. so it is not massive I think.
