An Open Letter to the Forum Nokia Community

I’m writing to invite you to a private beta of MOSH, our new user-generated content platform designed specifically for use with any mobile device.

Forum Nokia is providing resources and channels for developers to help drive their success in the market. Our landscape is expanding; we have seen an influx of content innovators seeking tools and channels to express themselves and and a strong push from the community overall to share their content via mobile.

Now obviously the Web has opened up these types of avenues but there has not been a service in the industry that is dedicated to delivering a platform designed for producers of all kinds — from software apps to images to sound and video — made expressly for mobile. It’s time for something new.

This is why we at Forum Nokia built MOSH (“MObilize and SHare”) for you. Following the tradition of programs we’ve hosted before within Forum Nokia, MOSH is a grand experiment for us: a platform that puts unprecedented power in the hands of mobile users. Regardless of your mobile device’s manufacturer or make, MOSH enables you to create, collect and share your content and applications in a community setting.

And that’s it. This is the part where we turn the keys over to you.

Beginning August 9, we’re inviting only you and your fellow Forum Nokia members to sign up for our private beta. Just visit http://mosh.nokia.com, enter the password ALLACCESS, and register. After that, MOSH is all yours.

As we’ll be in an early beta stage, I’d love to get your feedback to help evolve the service. By the Fall, we’ll be adding all sorts of tools, allowing people to create content on the site itself, along with some other surprises.

We’re excited to have you along at this early stage in MOSH’s development. Let me know what you think of it!

Remember folks, this is an article about Nokia's MOSH project, not about .mobi, so don't get your hinies in a bunch over them not using mosh.mobi. Even their PC site is a subdomain of nokia.com.

Couldn't tell you but who cares? They had some nice comments about the .mobi site, it doesn't redirect to another tld (for those who continue to care about such things), it's a .mobi initiative by one of those much scorned .mobi backers, and the word is getting out about .mobi. Maxwellsmart is absolutely 100% correct, how sweet it is!

No doubt some .mobi antagonist™ will find something to complain about, let's see what is so wrong about this one now. IYHO Is this newsworthy enough to justify it's own thread or merely noteworthy and should be buried into the abyss of another multipage announcement thread? :imho: This is the much sought after unique and compelling™ .mobi content being built by a .mobi backer benefiting the .mobi ecosytem™ but you can hear a pin drop in this thread. Time to clean the turd colored .mobi despising glasses™ and see that indeed what has been so begged for by some is happening before our eyes.

This is most certainly news deserving of a thread... To see Nokia, whom many of us consider the primary backer (and for good reasons!) finally starting to back .mobi in a way evident to all, is a welcomed surprise and a treat to all those with a vested interest in the success of this extension.

For me, a .mobi fan with a little skeptic in me, it's stuff like this that allows me to believe that the backers (or at least some of them) are doing more than just throwing money around. The more people have confidence in this extension, the more people will be prepared to invest.

Kind of reminds me of a post in the LLLL.com thread about someone saying all LLLL.com (even horrible combinations) will be worth $200+ by next year. The response was, "Then why wouldn't someone get a bank loan and buy them all?"

The funny thing about this, was that I was thinking exactly the same thing...

If people are confident in the future success of .mobi, will they not invest more (money or time) in it? It certainly wouldn't take more than a similar story from a couple more backers to encourage me to increase my holdings

I don't find this news surprising at all since I'm convinced there is much more going on with the backers behind closed doors. Why some people question the backers commitment to .mobi because they aren't running around wearing .mobi t-shirts on TV ads trumpeting the arrival of .mobi is beyond me. Actually, I think I know why, because many domainers think this is required in order to flip average names for huge profits overnight. But it doesn't work that way, things take time to develop, yet some insist that if all this mass PR doesn't happen now then .mobi is doomed. Ridiculous.

So here is a .mobi initiative from a mTLD backer that is coming to light about ten months after the .mobi public launch. These things take time and by some corporate standards this is a seemingly swift move. There is no slow death of .mobi, only continued growth in the use of the extension. This isn't the first news to show it but only the latest and next week will probably bring some more. Does all this mean you will get a 5 figure offer for an average .mobi? NO! It means that this "ecosystem" (as some are fond of calling it) of .mobi is growing and developing before our eyes. Yet some will ignore the entire lawn and see only the occasional brown spot, as if perfection is required before you can call it a lawn. Nonsense.

yep. agreed. good points. i wish they would (mtld) wheel out a lot of the reserved quicker though & cheaper. sell only to endusers at auctions if need be. the more developed, the better. i have so much on, have developed a few & sold some of them to pay bills, but planning a big development binge with mobi soon

Nice post Scandi. Things like this do take time, and this is yet another positive step for .mobi, IMO.

Any domainer that rings the death knell for .mobi is more than likely just in it for a quick buck, and when they didn't get their quick buck they came in here to whine about .mobi.

There is no death, all I see is growing use and promotion of the extension.

Excellent news...... come on guys, it doesn't matter what the site address is anyway.. what's important is that content is being developed for mobiles!!!!
The popularity of the mobile internet is the key to the success of .mobi as an extension..... .mobi as an extension will have very little to do with the popularity of the mobile internet.

Content, content, content.... the rest will follow..

My belief is that once the internet has gone mobile the value of .mobi's will increase exponentially because their is no alternative extension at present, it does no harm that I consider .mobi to be a catchy, cool sounding extension as well..... in fact there is no logical argument (techies excluded for .mobi not to catch on because its memorable (like .com) & is the easiest way to access mobile sites for any company that DON'T own their respective .com (& for every .com owning company there are probably 5x that number of similarly named companies that don't!)

I understand the desire to see more action in regards to the Premium names, but we are already seeing mTLD working on the city.mobi Reserved names. I'm not sure how mTLD would qualify an "end user", I think the RFP process is very much an effort to do just that. But I doubt that any action on the Premium names right now would have any bearing on the development of sites like Mosh, or BofA, BMW, Amtrak, etc... There are plenty of .mobi TM brands and generics already in the hands of end users and domainers alike, waiting to be built and none of them have any bearing on the Premium names still held by mTLD. So I would rather mTLD be cautious with their Premium and Reserved pool, especially the Premiums in auction because unfortunately gems like flowers and realestate too often get lost in the wasteland of parking pages.
