Hello,

I'm not even quite sure how to start this question. I am curious what would be involved to be the company that handles the domain registration for a tld. Someone asked me this recently and I was stumped....

Let's approach the discussion like this, I want to control the registrations for people for a given extension, let's say .whatever .

How do I accomplish this?
Who do I need to contact?
How much is it going to cost me?

Assume that it's not a tld like .net, .org, or something that is severely taken already.

Thanks,
Chris

You mean a new extension or taking over something like .info??

Hiya,

I've sent a request for more information from IANA.org, was more curious on the general process. I've learned the proper terminology is "TLD sponsoring organization" as well.

Cass: taking over an existing TLD being handled quite poorly, although the process I suspect is the same.

there we go :D

If you don't have the $45,000 non-refundable proposal fee, you may as well not even think about it. If you do, you'll probably spend anther 6 figures putting together a proposal. Several who put in RFP's for the last round of new sponsored TLD's will be revising theirs as well. As I understand, there will only be 3 winners who's proposals are accepted.

Rumor at icannwatch over the past year indicates that the sponsor of .travel may already have all but the formalities of getting their RFP approved.

Good luck.

Non-refundable application processing fees is $50,000. More, applicant has also to show his ability to run and maintain a TLD registry globally, which obviously include hardware, software and human resources and all other required standard infrastructure. It's millions dollars game.
