I own a site that I have a whois gaurd on and I had someone contact me inquiring to buy my site.

The weird part is that its a political party. I was planning on using the site to voice my opinions towards everything that I wanted to rant and rave about in regards to politics.

How would this have happened?

I wrote back that saying that I would be willing to negotiate 15k but in the meantime, I'll be developing the site, if no other offers.

We'll see, I was going to go get it appraised, but I dont know what to look for.

What do you mean you were going to get it appraised but dont know what to look for? If they want to talk then talk, otherwise develop the damn thing :)

though there is a big chance it is a legit buyer ... since you mention "appraisal" in your last post ... I think you should read this story in domainappraisalscam.com

I didnt mean that I was going to get it appraised.

I wasnt paying attention to what I was writing.

The sentence should read like this:

I was going to get the site developed but now I don't know what to.

oh , ok , I just thought I should post a link to the entire appraisal scam procedure in case you did not find enough info about it from searching around the forum ...

if the $8500 offer is legit (and supposing you are talking about texasdemocratdotcom) , it might be a good idea to sell , unless you have specific plans for it ... you could try to raise it a little (with counter-offers) but the price is already rather good ... bear in mind that your domain (like 2008.INFO I am selling) is rather time-sensitive ... even though it can probably used on the next elections too (or 2008.INFO as an archive) in general it is going to be hot and in demand only until the elections ...

if you decide to sell , make sure you use Escrow.com or some other escrow to complete the transaction safely ...

What was their response for the counter offer of 15 k ?

oops ... missed a letter ... it still is a rather good price for the domain ...

texasdemocrat.com forwards to John Kerry's site ...

also your domain can be used in other elections too (besides presidential) which potentially adds to the value ... still though the price seems rather fair ... though $10k might be a little fairer ...

since it's your domain , it's up to you ...

yeah lol ... with domains there is always the thought "what if they are prepared to spend more ?" or "what if another buyer comes along ?" ... don't worry too much ... make up your mind ... and if it is "sell" , have a nice party with some of the proceeds (and don't look back lol)

How would this have happened?

Maybe they paid for a domaintools registrant search on your name ?? Did you have whois privacy from day one ?

Nice starting offer though :) hope you get a great sale out of it
(but as mentioned watch out for con men)

I havent heard back from them yet, which is reasonable as it wasnt long since they've emailed me. Its kinda inspired me to look at my other domains to see what might sell or not. I told myself that I was going to multitask and see what I can do within this site.

Ok!
Who wants an update? They wrote back telling me they liked everything they were hearing and wanted to make sure that it was my final asking price. I wrote back getting confused and my alarm bells went off after researching through everything today that I might be getting taken advantage of, when they told me that I would have to transfer the name to them before they paid. I am not that stupid...yet.

Just thought everyone would like to know.

Thanks for all the support!

I offered to do escrow because I was uncomfortable at just letting my domain go like that.

Oh well, we'll see what goes :) but not holding my breath!

it is possible the end user does not understand domain business, still the
offer could be legit.

Hold up and be careful. :)

Ask them to use the escrow.

Yea, this got all crazy. I decided that I would go elsewhere or build the site up. I read last night that because my domain is close to texasdemocrat that I get lots of type in traffic :D

Get the buyer on the phone if possible and let the buyer know there is possibility to create a transfer agreement that would bring piece of mind for the buyer and you at the same time, by having a third party like Moniker or Escrow.com handle the procedure of domain ownership transfer and the handling of the funds.

It sounds to me, as said before, the buyer isn't very up to date when it comes to domain transfers, so it's best to assure the buyer it can be dealt in a secure and trusted manor for the both of you.

It's really a great offer and although you may get lots of type-in traffic it's not traffic you can monetize on as everything you will present the visitor related outside politics is not of interest.

My advice is to sell and use those funds to acquire a domain with traffic but excellent development potential as well.

You'll be glad if you made that decision really, otherwise i sense a coulda - shoulda - woulda... moment of regret for you.

Take the deal and move on! :tu:

There a lot of domain scams, hijacking, etc. Be careful when you are approached by annonymous people/emails.
