Subdomains-Questions

Hi,

I have a question about subdomains.

First just to make sure I am using the correct terms. Lets assume I own "RealEstate.com" (I don't but hypothetically). If I started developing the website and wanted to break each regional area up by city such as the following:

Austin.RealEstate.com,
Orlando.RealEstate.com
Tokyo.RealEstate.com
X.RealEstate.com

Would the city in these examples be called a subdomain?

Next question.

Regardless of if I am calling it by its correct term or not my main question is how do you create those subdomains?

I don't need tech details right now but rather just is that a coding type thing? Are there any additional expenses with this type of thing? Any info anyone could provide on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

yes, they're called subdomains.
in cpanel it's easy to do, just login and then click on add subdomain and type "austin" and try next.

Yes, in the example of Austin.RealEstate.com, Austin is a subdomain of RealEstate.com.

In order to create a subdomain, you need to add a DNS record (either a CNAME or an A record).

You can direct all subdomains to the same web application, or you can have separate applications handle different subdomains. You can also use a wildcard to define all subdomains of a particular domain (Note: some hosting companies don't allow this, but it is possible)

Do you have a hosting account somewhere? They would be the best people to ask about how to create subdomains.

I do not have a hosting account, so far my sites have been using Blogger. Any thoughts on good affordable hosts?

don't use 1and1, they're horrible.

I'd go with hostgator or bluehost.

I guess mostly I am just trying to learn more about them. It seems like a good way to take a domain name that is general like "helpwanted.com" (I do not own this name) and be able to market it in a specific geographic area like Orlando, as well as across a broad area.

This is what I am picturing. Someone goes to "Helpwanted.com" and there is a list of 50 or whatever cities. They see Orlando and click it and it brings them to Orlando.helpwanted.com.

Alternatively if I wanted I could go to a job fair in Orlando and have a sign that says "Check out Orlando.helpwanted.com!!! Don't forget the dot!"

Either way they are getting to the same site and I have it in my head that this is a good idea. Now that I explained it does it seem like I am needlessly complicating things?

More likely it would not be a job listing site but maybe a classified site like craigslist or maybe a food menu listing site, that part I don't know but its what I am picturing.

I used to want to do some things that way but discovered it can rob the SEO of the main site. Each subdomain is considered a unique website by the SE's and gets its own ranking so I dropped that in favor of subdirectories, like HelpWanted.com/Orlando.

If your using blogs like blogger to generate revenue.you can use free sub domains at www.com.co.in like www.yourname.com.co.in and make it little professional.

Or if you already own a domain then see above posts on how to add sub-domains to your existing domains.if you don't have a host right now.try using hostgator or if you want free host then try some sites like 110mb.com.

I believe now with the new ICANN rules and the "education" of the users the usage of subdomains will increase or at least will be accepted more than before
