One of my sites I am working on creates a few long and obnoxious urls and I'm looking for advice on what would be better from the seo perspective: create and promote a subdomain that points directly to the ugly url or use mod rewrite and htaccess to create a shorter/cleaner alias?

While I think the subdomain would be easier to remember and promote I am concerned that search engines would see it as a duplicate page as it would still be possible for the crawlers to pick up the ugly url...

Any thoughts?

I would just mod rewrite it. Subdomains arent really meant to be used to disguise ugly URL's.
