Sub Domains?

I want to put up my website but when I went to sign up for web hosting it brought the options of the usual domains and sub-domains but I'm not really clear on what sub-domains are. Are they the part of your domain such as amazon.com/dvd or are they other links from your domain? Can someone please clear this up for me, and should I go with a plan that uses unlimited sub-domains? Thanks.

Usually when a hosting company is offering subdomains they are referring to:

SUB.domain.com

So yes, if you want the ability to create unlimited subdomains such as info.yourdomain.com, then you'll want to go with a hosting plan that offers you unlimited subdomains.

If my hosting allows multiple subdomain, is it now possible to also have different types of websites installed?

Say, sd1.domain.com hosts a forum site
sd2.domain.com hosts an auction site
sd3.domain.com hosts a tutorial site
....

Good point here SUB.domain.com as this is the way it needs to be other then domain.com/SUB the reason being when its like this SUB.domain.com the search engines tend to take it as a domain unto its self ie... a totally new domain, where as when its like this domain.com/SUB the will in most cases take it as a sub of the main or top domain.
some hosts allow this others do not so before you buy into one check and ask questions to see if your needs will be met.
